In Emeraldia (Ireland), no one usually sees the fairies, but everyone knows where they live - in the green mounds that are scattered all over the countryside. The fairies protect Emeraldia from the evil that lurks beneath - the Black Air of the Underworld - but they depend on humans to respect and protect their mounds. A catastrophe happened in 1927 Paris when Finn O'Hara, the man who protected the most important mound, was forced out of Emeraldia and murdered in Paris. Then other fairy habitations were dug up, most of Emeraldia's fairies were made homeless, and so much evil fills the air that good humans are fleeing the country. The fairies know that their only hope is for history to be re-written. They have found a portal back to 1927 Paris, and they have asked Finn's great-grand-niece, 8-year-old Cornelia to go through it (accompanied by the exotic, dance-mad fairy, Tansy) and warn him of the danger he is in. To save Finn, Cornelia and Tansy stalk criminals on the Blue Train to Monte Carlo, on the Aquitania to New York, and on board Lindbergh's plane.

In 1837, the power of Daniel O'Connell's oratory focused the attention of Europeans on Ireland. They were horrified at what they saw there. The Irish poor - a third of the population - had no food except the potatoes they grew, and not enough clothing to cover themselves. They went hungry for two months of the year, and half-naked for all the year. Yet this would be their last 'good' decade before more than a million of them would vanish into unmarked graves in the 1840s. Séamas Ó Catháin was born in Tyrone in 1942 to a family of Catholic business people and farmers. His home town of Drumquin was 'a stone's throw' from the border that separates the Republic of Ireland from the Six Counties of Northern Ireland. This book is an engaging, often eye-opening, account of his experience - as a child and as a young man - in three distinctive cultures, now radically changed. 
He describes the Tyrone of the 1940s and 1950s where Protestant and Catholic neighbours shared their lives at a personal level, but where institutions were divisive. His father's prosperous business was ruined because of a political event he supported. The schools and the curriculum were dividers of the two communities. The border was a nuisance to everyone. 
As a post-graduate student in the 1960s, he took up residence in the Donegal Gaeltacht of Na Cruacha, where 'real old Irish' was still spoken. He carried out a study of the placenames of Na Cruacha, recording the area's distinctive music and speech. 
Shortly afterwards his research took him to the far north of Europe, to Sápmi (an area extending over parts of four countries, and generally known as Lapland). There he immersed himself in the culture and language of the Sámi people, at a time when their native language and customs were belittled and under threat.
