This book focuses on a significant, but neglected, leader of the social gospel movement, University of Chicago theologian Shailer Mathews (1863-1941). In two widely read lives of Jesus-The Social Teaching of Jesus (1897) and Jesus on Social Institutions (1928)-Mathews laid a foundation for social gospel theology that dealt carefully and creatively with the charge that the social gospel enculturates Christian faith. Lindsey's book engages in a close reading of the two Mathews books, and concludes that Mathews's foundation for social gospel theology prefigures political and liberation theologies in important respects, and thus deserves reappraisal.

Montgomery invokes Bakhtin's work on the chronotope to demonstrate that some Hollywood locales have surprisingly ancient progenitors. He considers the hermeneutic functions of recognizable chronotopes in the film text and the central importance of the idyllic chronotope for political commentary. The Dalton School, an independent, progressive school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, was founded in 1919 by Helen Parkhurst. Influenced by educational leaders such as Maria Montessori, Frederic Burk, Carlton Washburne, and John Dewey, Helen Parkhurst established a child-centered, progressive school which attempted to incorporate the notion of a democratic community within the boundaries of an educational program. This innovative program became known as The Dalton Plan. In this book, Susan F. Semel tells the story of The Dalton School from its earliest beginnings through the present day. Her story traces the history of progressive education within the walls of The Dalton School, focusing on the school's heads, including Charlotte Durham, Donald Barr and Gardner Dunnan. During certain periods of the school's history, as progressive education waxed and waned in the educational community at large and as educators responded to demands for more content-based curriculum, The Dalton Plan was modified. At other times, the school was impervious to the infusion of current educational thought. Consequently, during some periods of its history, The Dalton School was on the cutting edge of educational reform while, during others, the school swam against the tide of «alternative education» or neo-progressivism to favor a traditional back-to-basics approach. Ultimately, Semel uses the original Dalton Plan as a yardstick by which to measure what has happened to progressive education in the larger world. While Susan Semel concludes that The Dalton School, in its present state, is not the same school that Helen Parkhurst founded, it still employs an educational program that pays attention to the needs of a multicultural society and reconfirms the spirit of child-centered pedagogy as an important concern of the Dalton community.

The small group of Peregrinus plays contains a wealth of fascinating elements. They illustrate one of the initial stages of the development of medieval theatre, show the level of dramatic expression present in medieval liturgy and thus form an important part of the cultural history of Europe. The Peregrinus plays and liturgical drama in general can never be regarded as theatrical presentations in the true Aristotelian sense of the word. They are too deeply embedded in the liturgy itself and make use of too many liturgical texts, functions and furnishings for them to be defined as such. Therefore, regardless of the opinions voiced in the world of literature and drama, an extremely strong case can be made for the liturgical point of view, namely, that the Peregrinus plays and similar medieval liturgical celebrations could best be described as liturgical drama. The plays contain elements of both.

The land tenure crisis has reached Africa, leading to insecure tenancy, landlessness, resource rights conflicts and less investment in appropriate agricultural technology. This study analyzes the interrelation between land tenure and technological change and their contributions to sustainable agrarian and rural development. The research approach is based on New Institutional Economics and interdisciplinary fieldwork in Togo, Benin, Cameroon and Sudan. In summary, the emerging informal, non-registered private tenure systems neither have impeded technological change nor have they been an obstacle to access to credit whereas common property has been severely eroded and undermined by institutional and technological change. However, these dynamics actually give African nations an opportunity to start or to proceed with far reaching institutional and legal reforms and the re-formulation of a coherent land policy.
