Emil Marriot is the pseudonym of Emilie Mataja (1855-1938), an Austrian woman writer who was highly regarded during her lifetime, but whose work has not received the scholarly attention it deserves. After an evaluation of previous criticism and a biography that concentrates on her development as a writer, this study examines in detail her contribution to short fiction, the genre most neglected heretofore by critics. By giving greater consideration to the formal aspects of Marriot's work, this study overcomes the methodological lapses in earlier studies and demonstrates on a substantial critical basis Marriot's significance as a writer of fiction.

Ulrich Becher's publications have spanned fifty years, a career matched by few other Hitler exiles, for whom mere survival was a mark of distinction. Like most exile authors, Becher and his works stand outside the literary canon. Reception aesthetics, because it focuses on the audience and other social and cultural factors, provides a critical perspective that is especially informative in the study of lesser known authors. Computer-assisted statistical analysis makes possible the treatment of massive amounts of secondary material, thereby strengthening critical insights into the literary-historical process.

The triangular clause relationship not previously studied in detail comprises two subordinate clauses relating back to one head clause. Because of the comparative tightness of such a relationship, preferred patterns and possible influencing factors of the clause order can be discerned in AElfric's Lives of Saints, which then provides a basis for comparative studies of other works using the same or a similar source, showing that the use of the triangu- lar clause relationship is a stylistic marker of some considerable interest.

A thorough interpretation of Schnitzler's dramas, published after World War I, shows a distinct development toward maturity. This can be seen in the complexity of his characters, especially women who manifest personal freedom of choice in their lives. The idea of equating «home or returning home» with «love» is new and indica- tive of the maturing process. The theme of age or aging is inter- preted differently. Recurring «Leitgestalten» and «Leitmotive» emphasize Schnitzler's process of ethical and moral revaluation in his late dramatic works. Contrary to common assumptions, these dramas continue to demonstrate the importance Schnitzler's as a dramatist.

In this commentary the author presents a reading of Plato's Protagoras with a special concern for the fact that the work is a dialogue. He shows how the intentions of both Socrates and Protagoras, and the specific dramatic circumstances, affect the discussion concerning the teachability of virtue. Mr. Goldberg contends that in order to grasp the order of the arguments about the unity of virtue, Athenian education and democracy, continence, and hedonism, one must consider all the seemingly casual incidents and inter- changes. In particular, he sees in Socrates' ironic analysis of a poem of Simonides a response to the famous speech of Protagoras which contains the sophist's version of the Promethean creation myth. The differences between sophistry and philosophy are clarified, and Socrates emerges as the dutiful citizen doing his best for democratic Athens.
