A cette époque, tous les observateurs s’accordent également à dire que l’arrivée des chemins de fer a eu des effets bénéfiques sur l’économie du pays. En centrant l’analyse sur les politiques tarifaires marchandises, cet ouvrage apporte un certain nombre d’éclaircissements et révise certains à priori. Entre 1850 et 1913, le prix du transport diminue certes de 85% en Suisse. Les conséquences de la rupture irrémédiable de la barrière des distances sont cependant ambivalentes : ruine pour certains secteurs peu compétitifs ; décollage pour d’autres qui profitent de l’arrivée à bas prix des matières premières ou de l’accessibilité à de nouveaux marchés lointains. Au fil des pages, il apparaît que ce sont davantage les constructions tarifaires extrêmement complexes des compagnies suisses que la position privilégiée de leur réseau au centre de l’Europe ferroviaire qui ont permis de capter une grande partie du trafic de transit européen. Une situation qui perdure aujourd’hui encore.

Inefficient ports can stall a country’s trade growth and also increase the costs of transportation. Rising inefficiencies in ports have therefore forced the governments all over the world to deregulate the port system. This illustrated edition of The New Bath Guide by Christopher Anstey is based on the Second Issue of the First Edition which was published in 1766. It includes two major additions made by the author, the «Epilogue» and «A Charge to the Poets». It aims at widening the perspective on the eighteenth century by examining the work of a minor poet and challenges conventional assumptions about the scope of minor poetry.  This series of satirical letters in verse written by the members of a provincial family staying in Georgian Bath provides an inexhaustible source of fun and has great sociological interest. Thanks to the individual and varied voices which are heard in this epistolary poem, a whole society in the making comes alive through the distorting mirror of satire.  The introduction, notes and appendices throw new light on a once famous and provocative text and make extensive use of little-known material such as significant parts of the author’s correspondence. They situate Anstey’s work in its literary and historical contexts, by locating it at the junction of fiction and documentation, at a time of emergence, when new social codes were defined for a new society.

This book investigates the migration of nearly 20% of the population from the village of Frauenstein-Wiesbaden (Germany) in the mid nineteenth century (1852-54) to Australia, using the letters and diaries of the towns-people, as well as official records and documentation. These migrants were imported as indentured workers for the developing wine industry, being sponsored by the Australian colonial authorities, and their stories make a significant contribution to both the migration debate as well as early Australian history.  Using the voices of ordinary people revealed in their writing to and from Europe (the Frauenstein Letters) gives new insights into the migration process: What urged these people to migrate? What did they think about migration and how were they affected by it? Much of this migration correspondence has been generated by the female members of the family and, as treasured possessions, the letters have survived a century and a half and provide a window onto the experiences of ordinary working women whose voices from that period were seldom heard. The female construct of memory, and hence of history, is different and this book shows how important female migrant letters are in enhancing our knowledge of history and human migration.
