The influence of Salomon de Brosse upon the development of French seventeenth-century architecture was of paramount importance and his stature was recognized by many early critics. But since the eighteenth century, he has been undeservedly neglected because of the destruction of many of his buildings. Though the architect of the Luxembourg Palace, one of the principal buildings in Paris, he is not as well known today, even in France, as many less significant architects; the only monograph hitherto published, appeared sixty years ago, when almost none of the material used in this present study was available.There has recently been a revival of interest in de Brosse's work, particularly with regard to its relevance to the early architecture of Francois Mansart. Equally important, however, is de Brosse's relationship to his own predecessors. His debt to and his startling breakaway from the style of the late sixteenth century and the influences which encouraged this break are now examined for the first time.Against this background, all de Brosse's buildings are analyzed in detail in the text. In addition the book contains, for more specialized study, an alphabetical Catalogue of Works listing all sources and giving a chronology for each building.

The first book in English to relate modern forms of Theravada meditational practice to its Indian roots, this volume rectifies the publishing imbalance toward Mahayana and Zen. The classic Theravada pattern in Buddhaghosa's Pat!, of Purification (circa AD. 500) is shown to be relevant to the present Buddhist world.Beginning with a general description of similarities and differences between the Upanishadic-Yogic and early Buddhist viewpoints, the author goes on to analyze Gotama's rejection-acceptance-modification of the Upanishadic-Yogic method of striving for moksa (salvation) in his search for Buddhahood (enlightenment).A second major section analyzes the meditational method of Buddhaghosa, showing the interaction between Upanishadic-Yogic jhanas (modes of concentration) and Buddhist vipassana (insight meditation).The final chapter discusses the attraction of Theravada meditation in parts of the contemporary world, notably Burma, drawing upon materials little known in the West. In Burma and, to some degree, in Ceylon and Thailand, emphasis is on a simplified meditational method open to layman as well as monk, yet viewed as fully orthodox.

"As Dr. Austin persuasively portrays him," according to the foreword, "Lyon was one of the new breed of upwardly mobile political figures, quick to profit from the expanding economy of the post-Revolutionary and early national years, yet caught up in the challenges of state and nation-building."A teenage indentured servant from Ireland in 1764, Lyon by the end of the Revolution was a militia colonel, a developer of an iron manufacturing town, and a founder of the new state of Vermont, Colonel Lyon campaigned as much against the New York "Aristo-Tories" as against the ministers of George III. He and his fellow frontiersmen flirted with the British command until Congress recognized Vermont's statehood.In 1801, at the age of 52, Lyon transplanted his family to the Kentucky frontier, founded a mercantile town, and was again elected to Congress. The last section of the book traces Lyon's vacillating political stance in the House between 1802 and 1810, his conflicts over using slave labor, his financial and political reversals during the war of 1812, and his final years as a U.S. Factor to the Cherokee Nation in the Arkansas Territory.
