A major exploration of an important topic of Southern literature the Negro during the most artistically productive period the American South has ever known. Every significant artist and innumerable minor authors of Southern Renaissance have discussed Negroes or have used Negro characters in their stories. Going beyond the study by Sterling Brown on Negro stereotypes, which summarizes patterns of characterization prior to 1930, Professor Tischler examines the changes apparent in the New South with this new, talented group of writers. The faithful retainer and the tragic mulatto are still around, but altered. The miserable freeman, the exotic primitive, and the comic Negro have virtually disappeared. The brute-Negro character has metamorphosed into the new Negro. And a number of new types have appeared, including the hero of the twenties, the black Christ, and the hero of the thirties, the black proletarian.Professor Tischler concludes that the modern realist, naturalist, or symbolist is interested in exploiting Negro characters more fully than were older, more romantic authors. As mass-heroes or as symbols of alienation or of the search for identity, they are exciting material for literature. In addition, as reflections of changing attitudes and social patterns, they provide an interesting link between sociology and literature. The study therefore, although primarily concerned with literary judgments, also provides much interest to the historian, the sociologist, and the general reader.

This book presents a new view of the development of Indo-European grammar, arguing that this view is as tenable as those which prevail among most specialists. The author's synthesis is offered primarily as a heuristic device, on the ground that any reconstruction of the course of historical events necessarily contains probabilistic and analogical elements. His objection to most prevailing views is that by claiming or implying certainty they stifle investigation beyond established patterns of thought.Among Professor Schmalstieg's specific contentions are: that a morphological change may result from a combination of factors often treated as mutually exclusive (for instance, by structuralists and transformationalists); that different languages may evolve in different ways.The books four substantive chapters cover phonology (chiefly the evolution of the Indo-European vocalic system), the evolution of noun and verb forms, and the relation between morphology and syntax.

The hypothesis of this book is that Indo-European was originally an isolating language that only gradually developed the complicated system of noun inflection presented in attested sources. In Shield's view the earliest noun endings served as exponents of ergative and absolutive cases, with nouns being divided into three semantic categories, namely; inanimate, animate and natural agent.Like W.R. Schmalstieg, Shields combines sociolinguistic, phonlogical, and analogical approaches to language change, rejecting what both consider an over-emphasis on typology. In essence, this volume is a direct development of Schmalstieg's call for 'a new way of looking at many of the problems of Indo-European grammar' -set forth in his Indo-European Lingusitics: A New Synthesis. The purpose of this book is frankly heuristic: to stimulate further research and analysis.

During the 1980s the Mexican regime faced a series of economic, social, and political disasters that led many to question its survival. Yet by 1992 the economy was again growing, with inflation under control and the confidence of international investors restored. Mexico was now touted as an example for regimes in Eastern Europe to emulate. How did Carlos Salinas and his team of technocrats manage to gain political power sufficient to impose their economic model? How did they sustain their revolution from above despite the hardships these changes brought for many Mexicans? How did they stage their remarkable political comeback and create their democracy within reason? Why did Salinas succeed in keeping control of his revolution while Mikhail Gorbachev failed to do so in his similar effort at radical reform? Miguel Centeno addresses these questions by analyzing three critical developments in the Mexican state: the centralization of power within the bureaucracy; the rise of a new generation of technocrats and their use of a complex system of political networks; and the dominance of a neo-liberal ideology and technocratic vision that guided policy decisions and limited democratic participation.
