The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, America's oldest museum and school of fine arts, was founded in Philadelphia in 1805. Today the Academy boasts one of the nation's finest collections of American art and a roster of alumni embracing the greatest artists this country has produced. This volume celebrates two centuries of the Academy's achievement. Six scholarly essays document the history of the institution and its collections, curriculum, and buildings. In addition, 220 masterpieces of American art from the permanent collection are presented in full color with descriptions of each. The illustrations document the Academy's position as one of the premier art institutions in the United States.

History & Criticism

The artist best known for her New York Beautification Project--40 lozenge-shaped miniature landscapes illicitly painted on urban surfaces in public spaces around New York City from 1999 to 2001--has gone legit and gone indoors with Mirror, a site-specific installation at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Playing off the Academy's Victorian architecture and academic traditions, in which students copy works of art, Harvey literally holds a mirror up to Frank Furness' Victorian Gothic architecture, copying the image of his interior stair hall as a nearly life-size reverse engraving on mirror. The glass is illuminated from behind so the engraved lines glow, and the resulting nearly 360-degree drawn environment is anchored by a video projection of Harvey creating the work. Mirror documents and puts in context Harvey's most ambitious site-specific work to date, and also serves as a mini-monograph, a short survey of her career, highlighting projects from 1998 to the present with brief descriptions written by the artist.

Chicago is known as a center of innovation in architecture, literature and music, but Art in Chicago is the first broad overview of its twentieth-century fine art. It focuses on three distinct but overlapping generations of Modernists between 1913 and 1985--not just postwar artists such as Leon Golub and June Leaf, or later stars like Ed Paschke and Jim Nutt and the 1960s Hairy Who--not any one clique, but the links between them. Through the decades, Chicago's art world has had a predilection for variety and the authenticity of personal vision, which it consistently privileges over the emulation of trends or established styles. While Laylah Ali's early work examined the moral and physical violence within and between groups, she has recently turned her attention toward the myriad ways identity is manifested--whether by clothing, hairstyle, body type, skin color or other physical attributes or abilities. This 48-page paperback is the first publication to examine these new ink drawings, known as the Typology Series, which are much more highly detailed than her signature gouache paintings, the Greenheads. Whimsical and even humorous at times, on closer inspection, Ali's work offers disturbing insight into power struggles, racial subjugation, oppression and political abuse. She references questions of race, class, gender and power, and yet asks us to finish the stories she has started with information we bring to the work--including our own political beliefs, cultural biases and family histories.
