This book describes the vision of a "Green Revolution" proposed by Peter Maurin, co-founder with Dorothy Day of the Catholic Worker Movement. Peter's vision may be described as a new lay ecological monasticism for individuals and families. His program included three interrelated projects: 1) creation of rural ecovillages pursuing prayer, study, and agriculture; 2) creation of urban houses of hospitality to welcome the marginalized poor; and 3) ecological universities in which workers would become scholars and scholars would become workers. Gillgannon ("Padre Miguel") has shared wonderful stories about his work alongside the people of Bolivia and about his encounters with teachers, artists, theologians, and others. (President Morales was elected as the first Native-American president ever of Bolivia, a country whose overwhelming majority is Native American and who in turn suffered for approximately 500 years under European and European-American domination.) In particular, Father Gillgannon's Parish of San Antonio de Padua in the Andes mountains comes alive with his description of colorful annual indigenous fiestas of life, community, and faith. IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, the Catholic Church made an epoch-defining magisterial, philosophical, and theological turn from an "ahistorical" methodological "habitus" toward a praxis-based methodology that interprets "historical reality," especially the reality of the poverty, as a locus theologicus. This book shows how the development of this turn began in pre-conciliar Western Europe, next flourished during the pontificates of John XXIII and Paul VI and at Vatican Council II, then became vital to liberation theology in post-conciliar Latin America, and eventually grew into the contemporary paradigm of "practical theology." The book chronicles the contributions of a range of twentieth-century Catholic philosophers, theologians, and members of the Magisterium who created and advanced this turn across Western Europe, Latin America, and North America. Today, the turn has been additionally developed in Africa and Asia, and the author looks forward to learning from additional Catholic theological voices from those important global regions. DR. BOB PENNINGTON, a native of West Virginia, grew up in Gainesville, Florida and attended the University of Florida in pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Political Science. THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK is to show that many SanJuanist commentators err in portraying St. John of the Cross as a world-negating contemplative by calling him the doctor of the dark night of the soul. This misinterpretation is informed by their failure to understand John’s historical context, especially the problem of conversos (Jewish and Muslim converts to Catholicism) in sixteenth-century Spain. It is time to study St. John of the Cross as a whole person and in his historical context of sixteenth-century Spain, and thus bring together his multifaceted dimensions. Attention needs to be given to his active role in the Carmelite tradition as a religious reformer, an administrator, and a prophet; to his intellectual capacity as a mystical theologian and teacher; and to his religious devotion as a poet, friar, hermit, spiritual director, confessor, and priest. The book begins with a brief history of contemplation and action in the Christian mystical tradition and it then reviews the biography and writings of this Carmelite saint. It also examines John’s writings through the eyes of Raimundo Panikkar’s tripartite model of action, wisdom, and devotion. Finally, it concludes with an assessment of the SanJuanist legacy for today’s world. THE CLERICAL SCANDAL OF SEXUAL-ABUSE and coverups, caused by a significant minority of the episcopacy and presbyterate of the Roman Catholic Church, has precipitated a strategic intellectual debate. On one side, the so-called 'conservative' intellectual diagnosis blames what some see as a broad presence within the contemporary Western Roman Catholic clergy of persons with homosexual tendencies. On the other side, the so-called 'progressive' intellectual diagnosis blames "Clericalism," which it sees only as a problematic psychological attitude, or an authoritarian, non-transparent, and unaccountable organizational culture, or both. This small book has not been written to defend either side of that debate, but rather to understand how Roman Catholic Clericalism is a systemic institution. Even so, it is important to state that any 'conservative' scapegoating of persons with a homosexual orientation for the clerical sexual-abuse and coverup scandals, as if homosexuality itself were the cause, blasphemes the image of God in those among us with a homosexual orientation. All human persons, regardless of sexual orientation, carry the beauty and dignity of our loving Creator's sacred image. It is also important to state that, while the 'progressive' diagnosis is correct at the surface level, it nonetheless fails to unveil the deep root of Clericalism as an historically legislated and non-evangelical institution, which inevitably regenerates problems and even pathologies for each successive clerical generation. The 'progressive' diagnosis also fails to explore how the non-evangelical institution of Roman Catholic Clericalism was historically constructed by imperial, papal, and conciliar legislation over more than a millennium and a half, and how it is now undermining the Western Catholic evangelization. Deepening the analysis of Clericalism to its foundational and tenacious institutional level is the purpose of this small book.
