Ida Affleck Graves, was first published as Ida Graves by Lenoard Woolf and the Hogarth Press; later (post-war) novels came from Faber. Then a long silence, during which she wrote but stuffed poems into a drawer, was broken by OUP's book of poems, A Kind Husband , published in 1994. The Calfbearer consists of nearly all new poems, written since then, as vigorous and moving as ever. The poems are emphatic and observant, on subjects such as her childhood, animals; and a few that look bravely on death. Ida Affleck Graves will be 97 in March 1999 This book is intended for poetry readers, and women's studies' courses.

Peter Scupham's individual collections have usually taken as their subject one predominant theme - the enigmas of prehistory, his wartime childhood, the passing of the Edwardian generation his parents belonged to.
