A visual investigation of the author's family history, The Longest Way Round is a construct of historical images woven together with new photographs. Uncovering a treasure trove of archive material not intended for the family album, Dorley-Brown's book presents a multi-layered alternative narrative for the course of events that shaped the late 20th century. Two Londoners born in 1920 embark on a series of journeys shaped by war, romance, and subsequent settlement in a seaside paradise. Unable and unwilling to recall their most traumatic experiences for their five children, a box of photographs, film negatives and letters was bequeathed to the youngest child - a photographer. He attempts to form a new narrative with the archive, integrating his own pictures made in the UK and on travels through Europe that follow in the footsteps of his mother and father. During World War II Dorley-Brown's parents Peter and Brenda were not yet married, but had known each other as childhood friends. At age 19 Peter volunteered as a heavy artillery sergeant and survived the Battle of Crete, four years as a prisoner of war in German stalag camps, and a death march of more than 500 miles in extreme weather near the end of the war. Some of his photographs that were confiscated while a POW appear in this book. While captive at Stalag VIIA near Munich, Peter befriended a guard - Conrad Barnack - the son of Oskar Barnack who invented the Leica 35mm camera. Peter and Conrad would later reconnect after the war was over. Chris Dorley-Brown's contemporary images resonate the effects of his family history on his own outlook decades later. This intimate book addresses subjects of personal identity and memory, and offers potential for a sense of closure for the author.

Illustrated with degraded images from films submerged in Adriatic seawater, this photo/text docufiction unravels a narrative in which the lagoon city poignantly chronicles its own disappearance. Combining fictitious storytelling and poetic photography, Solastalgia sheds light on an increasingly urgent environmental issue affecting the archipelago of 118 islands that make up the city of Venice, Italy. Venice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the European city most under threat from the impact of climate change. Its buildings and fragile foundations are progressively eroded by rising global sea-levels, land subsidence, frequent high tides, and maritime pollution caused by hulking cruise ships. In the past hundred years the water level has risen by nearly 30cm (12in) - sparking 'extreme concern' from the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2016. Written in the voice of Venice - a city deserted by its inhabitants and sinking gradually into oblivion - this emotive book recalls its former life of grandeur and speculates on the outcome of its worsening predicament. Photographs are made from film negatives that lay soaking for weeks in the same Adriatic seawater that is actively deteriorating and swallowing the city.

A curious tale spun from the life of mysterious hermit Joseph Plummer, who lived in the woods of central New Hampshire in the late 1700s. Two centuries later an unsuspecting man purchased the mythical loner's land and built a hideaway cabin for himself - only to discover the legend of Joseph lurking deep in the seclusion of the forest. This atmospheric photobook explores our human desire to escape and find peaceful solitude, far from the burdens and apparatus of modern society. Exploring themes of history, place and mythology, Amani Willett's photographs track the hermit's overgrown trail through the land his family now owns. Willett's father, unaware of the reclusive man who roamed the area nearly 200 years before him, acquired the deed 40 years ago with the intention of establishing a rustic retreat. Upon learning of Plummer's existence, Willett endeavoured to photograph a fragmented narrative amidst the same landscape he once inhabited. He scoured local archives to find first-hand written accounts describing the hermit's character, as well as bona fide personal effects which appear in the book. Adding to the visual journey are historical portrait and landscape images from the region that inspired Willett's physical intervention in the form of destructive applique and collage. The resulting work mirrors the past while keeping Plummer's unknowable history intact. It also reveals how the hermit's existence still resonates today - not only as a constant counterpoint to our fast-paced, technology-driven times - but in conjuring the same romanticised allure that tempts new generations to also venture off-grid.
