The eminent geologists to whom this study of one of the most perplexing problems of Nile Valley structure is due have made an extremely significant contribution. Rising and falling lake levels within the Faiyum during relatively recent times, dynastic or at most Neolithic, have heretofore monopolized attention. The present writers have instead traced the geologic history of that region back beyond the origin of the Faiyum depression itself. The Nile Valley as a whole has been investigated as a background for this detailed study, and will itself be treated more at length in a later volume (see OIP 17, ed.). The present volume concludes the series of studies in Arabic literary papyri as envisaged in the Preface to Volume I. The studies reveal a steadily accelerating literary activity in both the religious and secular fields throughout the Umayyad period. Poets and scholars in the various fields used concurrent oral and written transmission for the publication, transmission, and preservation of their literary products. The isnad, particularly in its multiple forms, was used to a much greater degree in the religious than in the secular fields. For poetry the family isnad took second place to that stemming from a poet's personal secretary, katib, or from his transmitter, rawi. At the end of the 19th century, during the first year of his commission to copy inscriptions for the proposed German-Egyptian dictionary, Professor James Henry Breasted wrote, "I am now laying plans to copy not merely the historical, but all the inscriptions of Egypt and publish them." It was not until 1924 that he was able to put his plan into action. The present volume completes the documentation of the reliefs and inscriptions on the buildings at Medinet Habu constructed and decorated during the reign of Ramses III. Its Eastern High Gate is a structure unique among the extant ancient buildings of Egypt.

The second volume of The Excavations in the Plain of Antioch describes a series of excavations in the Syro-Palestinian region. The three sites included in the report are Çatal Hueyuek, Tell al-Judaidah and Tell Tayinat, all situated in the central part of the Amuq valley around the city of Rihaniyyah.

This volume presents transliterations of texts in the Ashmolean Museum, most of which are from Kish and Umm-el-Jir, near Kish. A few texts of unknown origin have also been included. The majority of these tablets are standard administrative texts such as are found in other great collections of Sargonic texts from Gasur, the Diyala region, Lagash, and Susa. A small but important group of texts consists of contracts or memos concerning contractual agreements. Other types of texts are also represented, including letters, orders, school exercises, and one incantation. This is the first collection of Sargonic texts from northern Babylonia. One of the most important contributions of the Kish and Umm-el-Jir texts is the light they shed on the geography and ethno-linguistic background of Babylonia; forty geographic names are mentioned, the most common being Mugdan, which may represent the ancient name of Umm-el-Jir. Indices of proper names and a catalogue of texts are included. One hundred and thirteen tablets are presented in photographic reproduction.

This volume records the expedition's 1961 finds from the cemeteries and settlements around Bab Kalabsha, including the architecture of the sacred complex of late Roman times on the heights above Bab Kalabsha, a small valley chapel at Taifa, Christian remains from settlements on the island of Darmus, and refuge-shelters erected on the high desert. The discovery of two cemeteries with distinctive remains dated to the middle of the fourth century A.D., roughly contemporary with the desert refuges, highlight the excavations. Large domical stone tumuli with high stone enclosures are attributed to Blemmye rulers of the area who were a major force in the political upheaval of Late Roman Egypt.

The Comparative Archaeology of Early Mesopotamia (Studies in Ancient Oriental Civilization)

The volume under review deals with the aims, methods, preliminary results and problems of three campaigns in Iraqi Kurdistan (1948, 1950-51, 1954-55). It does not offer a final excavation or exploration report, since some of the materials have not yet been studied in detail; but it contains a valuable series of essays about special aspects of the project which was undertaken as a first major attempt to identify the earliest village-materials and their immediate predecessors. The archaeological and general chapters to the book are the work of R. J. Braidwood and Bruce Howe. They explain the scene and progress of the field-work; they give a survey of the sites excavated and the materials collected (chapters I-V). The middle part of the book consists of contributions by the scientists who took an essential part in the field research: F. R. Matson writes on ceramic analysis and carbon 14 dating; H. E. Wright Jr. on climate and prehistoric man in the Eastern Mediterranean (a comparative study concerned with the entire Levant); H. Helbaek on the palaeo-ethnobotany of the Near East and Europe (an excellent chapter, most informative for the archaeologist in search of specific statements and analyses of early "agricultural" materials); and Charles A. Reed on animal domestication in the prehistoric Near East (again very instructive, often with an element of reproach directed to field archaeologists who neglected to recognize or salvage zoological evidence in their excavations). The concluding chapters review the results in a more general setting so far as they can be defined in chronological, "environmental" and general cultural terms and periods. Kassite kings (1595-1155 b.c.) reigned longer than any other dynasty in Babylonian history. From their time, more than twelve thousand cuneiform documents have survived. Less than ten percent of these have been published. This volume catalogues all dated texts of the dynasty, including extensive unpublished materials in museums in Asia, Europe, and North America. It also includes a comprehensive discussion of Kassite chronology, calendars, and date formulae and publishes two dozen texts with problematic or unusual dates.
