This book illustrates the richness of the Catholic priesthood by reference to the lives of ten men who, at different stages in history, committed themselves fully to follow Christ as laborers in His vineyard. These men - St. John Chrysostom, St. John Fisher, St. Oliver Plunkett, the Cure of Ars, Cardinal Newman, Archbishop John Baptist Lamy, St. Pius X, Blessed Cardinal Clement von Galen, St. Josemaria Escriva, Pope John Paul II - although very contrasting in personality and following very different paths, have several elements in common arising from the holiness of their lives. Thus we find in all a deep personal love for Christ, a willingness to sacrifice themselves generously for the salvation of souls, a great loyalty to the Magisterium, and a rich human sensibility.

During the twelve-month period from the summer of 2009 to the summer of 2010, Ireland experienced a remarkable sequence of weather disasters not seen for a generation or more. November 2009 was the wettest month in over 200 years in many parts of the country, and torrential rain led to severe flooding, especially in the west. Vast tracts of countryside and numerous villages and towns were inundated, including many new housing estates. In some places, the floods lasted until February 2010. This coincided with one of the most severe and persistent cold spells ever recorded in Ireland, with temperatures dropping below -15 degrees C in certain areas. There were thousands of falls and injuries, and many road-traffic accidents and further domestic flooding caused by burst pipes. Salt and sand ran out, energy-consumption soared, and schools were shut down. When the snow and ice melted, many areas - which had only recently dried out from the previous deluges - were re-flooded. This book explains these events, the rarity of the occurrences, and their dramatic impacts. Consideration is also given to the role of planning process, the management of waterways (especially the major dams), the role of local authorities, the response of central government, and the legal situation regarding clean-up procedures.

From prehistory to the present day, the wolf has always loomed large in the human imagination. An iconic symbol of the untamed and the wild, the wolf, as Ireland's last great predator, has always provoked fear, excitement, and wonder. This book examines a vast array of sources relating to wolves in Ireland. The book considers archaeological remains, name evidence (place and person, both in Irish and in English), and folklore. It also looks at the historical records of wolves in Ireland, including wolf attacks on livestock (and more rarely people) and describes how the extermination of wolves took place, with the last wolf being killed, most likely, in 1786. The causes of extermination are discussed in detail, including legislation, the role of bounties and professional wolf hunters, and deforestation. The book closes by assessing whether the Irish wolf could have been a unique sub-species and considers the controversial possibility of re-introduction.

This new, revised and expanded edition brings back into print an excellent resource for those interested in the history of the RIC and the revolutionary period generally. In the period 1816 to 1922 some 85,000 men served in the RIC and its predecessor forces. Information on all these policemen is available, constituting a quarry for their descendants in Ireland, the US and elsewhere. The book consists of chapters on the history of policing in Ireland (to illustrate the type of men in the Force, their background and their lifestyle etc.), followed by a section on 'Tracing your ancestors in the RIC'. New appendices to this edition identify members of the RIC who were rewarded for their service during the Young Ireland Rising, 1848; the Fenian Rising, 1867; the Easter Rising, 1916; and the War of Independence, 1919-21. Also members of the RIC who volunteered for service in the Mounted Staff Corps and the Commissariat during the Crimean War; members who served as drivers and orderlies on secondment to the Irish Hospital in the South African War in 1900; and members who served in the British Army in the First World War are identified. RIC recipients of the King George V, Coronation (Police) Medal, 1911; the Constabulary Medal; and the Kings Police Medal are listed, as are ex-RIC men who transferred to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1922 and received additional bravery medals. Some scholars have argued that she never existed as a real person but was merely the Christian personification of the cult of a pagan goddess of the same name. In the period 1832 to 1857 some 3,700 men served in the Irish Revenue Police. In this book, Jim Herlihy shows how to find information on these policemen, providing an excellent resource for those interested in the history of the IRP and the Irish Famine period. A chapter on the history and origin of the Irish Revenue Police and its predecessor forces engaged in 'still-hunting' is followed by a section in tracing your ancestors in the IRP. A complete list of IRP stations and Revenue Police Parties and their geographical distribution is shown. The rank structure and duties of the IRP is enumerated. To demonstrate the richness of the sources for constructing IRP biographies a rare case history of IRP Lieutenant Matthew Power (1820-84), later Chief Constable of Worcester (1861-84) who served in the IRP from 1847 to 1854 is included. The complete list includes every man who served in the IRP, giving his surname, forename and year of enlistment and indicates those, who on disbandment of the IRP on 1 October 1857 transferred to the (Royal) Irish Constabulary (519), the Dublin Metropolitan Police (48), the Londonderry City Police (3) or progressed to become Resident Magistrates (3). In the case of those ex-IRP men who joined the RIC, their registered numbers are given and whether they subsequently were dismissed, resigned, pensioned or died during their RIC service.
