New Firm Creation in the United States is the most comprehensive and detailed assessment of how new business come about.  Based on the first US Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED I), this study looked at over 130 factors related to business start-ups and focused on nascent entrepreneurs.  Some of its findings include:  · The large number and growth of nascent entrepreneurs · Major factors involved in the start-up process and becoming a nascent entrepreneur are unrelated to completion of the start-up process of a successful new firm · The activities of the start-up process - not the characteristics - impact the transition from start-up to successful new firm · Anybody can do this!  Any person with the knowledge, skills, ideas, drive and the ability to mobilize resources and organize a business can create a new firm.  New Firm Creation in the United States shows the value of tracking a representative sample of entrepreneurs in a longitudinal study.  The implications for public policy are huge in that efforts to increase new start-ups to improve economic growth may be different to those designed to assist disadvantaged groups develop a role in the economy though entrepreneurship.

Functional Form and Heterogeneity in Models for Count Data surveys practical extensions of the Poisson and negative binomial (NB) models that practitioners can employ to refine the specifications or broaden their reach into new situations. The author resolves some inconsistencies of the panel data models with other more familiar results for the linear regression model. Functional Form and Heterogeneity in Models for Count Data is focused on two large issues: · the accommodation of overdispersion and heterogeneity in the basic count framework · the functional form of the conditional mean and the extension of models of heterogeneity to models for panel data and sources of correlation across outcomes The first is more straightforward since, in principle, these are elements of the conditional variance of the distribution of counts that can be analyzed apart from the conditional mean. Robust inference methods for basic models can be relied upon to preserve the validity of estimation and inference procedures. A Stochastic Grammar of Images is the first book to provide a foundational review and perspective of grammatical approaches to computer vision. In its quest for a stochastic and context sensitive grammar of images, it is intended to serve as a unified frame-work of representation, learning, and recognition for a large number of object categories. It starts out by addressing the historic trends in the area and overviewing the main concepts: such as the and-or graph, the parse graph, the dictionary and goes on to learning issues, semantic gaps between symbols and pixels, dataset for learning and algorithms. The proposal grammar presented integrates three prominent representations in the literature: stochastic grammars for composition, Markov (or graphical) models for contexts, and sparse coding with primitives (wavelets). It also combines the structure-based and appearance based methods in the vision literature. At the end of the review, three case studies are presented to illustrate the proposed grammar. A Stochastic Grammar of Images is an important contribution to the literature on structured statistical models in computer vision.

Defining and Measuring Entrepreneurship reviews the most common concepts of entrepreneurship from the theoretical economics literature, identifying common elements and pointing to important differences. The purpose is to compare these theoretical ideas of entrepreneurship with the measures used in empirical country-level studies. Since a coherent or unifying definition of entrepreneurship has not emerged, the authors explain that it is important to be precise about the relationship between the different theoretical aspects of entrepreneurship and the empirical measures. This is revealed by comparing entrepreneurial activity across OECD countries using measures that reflect different theoretical aspects. Based on various data sources, the relative ranking of countries is very sensitive to the empirical measure used.

The Internet is a very large network with a complex array of control algorithms designed to facilitate data transfer by the users who use it everyday.
