Novell's Internet Plumbing Handbook is a unique book. It's all about the Internet plumbing: a vast infrastructure that supports a myriad of events resulting from a single mouse click in a Web browser. It's about what takes place behind the scenes when you use a search engine, connect to a favorite Web site, or download a file. This book is about how the Internet works and what makes it work. Novell's Internet Plumbing Handbook focuses on what goes on behind the screens! 
How many of us think about the path that water takes to reach our kitchen sink when we turn on the faucet? How often do we trace the tap water to its original source through the maze of pipes, water mains, and treatment plants? When we turn on that faucet, we expect the water to flow. The same holds true for the Internet. When we click, we expect results. 
So, if the inner workings of the Internet's plumbing intrigue you, and if you are curious about the origins of the Internet and its current architecture, then whatever your level of technical expertise, this book was written with you in mind. You can use the information in this book to broaden your knowledge and enrich your Internet experience. 
The following is a brief synopsis of the chapters in each part: 
Chapter 1, "Routing Demystified." The Internet's operation relies on routing. Your ability to communicate over the Internet relies on the correct implementation of routing principles. Basic routing concepts are introduced here in the context of everyday travel experiences. 
Chapter 2, "The Communication Model." In this chapter, computer communication is explained in terms of its five basic components: transmitters, receivers, transmission media, the message, and protocols or rules. The early beginnings of the Internet are explored and the first ARPAnet is graphically contrasted with today's Internet backbones. 
Chapter 3, "Layered Computer Architecture." This chapter is a spoof on a very serious topic in computer communications--the layered architecture of computers and computer networks. The basics of the Network Layer and of the Internet Protocol (IP) are explored. 
Chapter 4, "TCP/IP Routers: The Workhorses of the Internet." In this chapter, the rules or protocols that routers use to communicate with each other are explored in detail. Many illustrations are used to depict the operation of Routing Information Protocol (RIP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Technical complexities of these protocols are presented in the context of a simple fact. 
Chapter 5, "Router Configuration." Routers are only as good as their configuration. Router configuration requires an understanding of routing protocols discussed in Chapter 4 and networking technologies explored in Chapter 8. Examples of router configuration are presented here. 
Chapter 6, "Routing Support Under Major Operating Systems." Three popular network operating systems (Unix, NetWare, and Windows NT) are explored in the context of how they support routing functions. 
Chapter 7, "Transmission Media: The Cyber Pipes and Connectors." This chapter discusses the most physical component of the Internet. The volumes of Internet traffic may loom large, but most of it flows over strands of fiber barely visible to the naked eye. This chapter discusses these inert, dead-looking cables that facilitate the most incredible flows of information over the Internet. Practical tips are offered on twisted-pair wiring. Principles of fiber optics and fiber-optic cabling are explored. Terrestrial and satellite microwave transmissions are discussed. 
Chapter 8, "Data-Link Layer Protocols." The layered network architecture presented as a spoof in Chapter 3 is dealt with more seriously in this chapter. The second layer of the OSI Reference Model (the Data-Link Layer) is first explored generically, then it's discussed in the context of the widely deployed protocols operating at that layer: PPP, Frame Relay, ATM, and FDDI. This chapter concludes with how routers relate to these protocols. 
Chapter 9, "Vendor Examples." In this chapter, three categories of routers are examined: low-end (or access), mid-range, and high-performance backbone routers. Details of router hardware and new router design techniques necessitated by the increasing volumes of Internet traffic are discussed. Specific router models from Cisco and Ascend Communications are used as examples. 
Chapter 10, "Internet Routing." This chapter is the culmination of the preceding chapters. First, it explores the major evolutionary stages of the Internet and the role of the NSF in its evolution. Next, it discusses the current Internet architecture and the equipment used at Internet exchanges like the NAPs. Periodic crises resulting from Internet's phenomenal success are identified. Solutions to theses crises are discussed. Different types of ISPs are explored, and tips are offered on the hardware needed to set up a small ISP operation. Chapter concludes with a discussion of Virtual Private Networks, routing policies used by major ISPs and issues related to backbone router configurations. 
Chapter 11, "Switches: The Latest Rage." The Internet is all about communication. As the number of communicating devices continues to swell, the communication process comes under stress. It's like having too many friends; it's hard to maintain meaningful relationships with all of them. In Internet communications, the two fundamental issues are topological scalability and speed. As the topological awareness of Internet routers goes up, their performance tends to go down. New techniques to address these critical issues like Cisco's tag switching and Ipsilon's IP switching are explored. These are cutting-edge technologies whose success or failure will significantly impact the Internet's ability to remain a viable communications network. 
Chapter 12, "Conclusion: What the Future Holds." Many people are making dire predictions about the Internet. This chapter presents some personal thoughts on the Internet's future.
