The diaries of Fannie Taylor were written from 1914 to 1922 during her time at Mora, a community on the western edge of the Olympic Peninsula, now inside the boundaries of Olympic National Park. These entries have been transcribed from the original writings archived in the collections of Olympic National Park. Featured here are her diary entries of 1914 and 1915, -with few omissions. Fannie operated the store and overnight accommodations and served some meals, while also serving as postmaster at Mora. In her diaries Fannie describes the day to day activities of community life at Mora, and gives vivid descriptions of her homestead at Taylor Point, or ¿the ranche¿ as she called it. She kept a commentary of interactions with road builders, miners, Quileute and non-Indian neighbors, the stage and mail drivers, and the occasional tourist. A few details from her 1914 diary are supplemented with entries from her daughter Tealie¿s journal of that same time. To provide a visual perspective to Fannie¿s words, many of her photographs are included and identified whenever possible. Fannie was an aspiring photographer and her photographs presented along with her journal entries provide a unique portrait of life on the Washington coast in the early 1900s.

Drawing from diary entries and work logs, official accounts, memoirs, personal reminiscences, and hundreds of photographs and reproductions, Jack Rooney provides a well illustrated history of the wild peninsula from the perspectives of the hearty individuals working on the land with the U.S. Forest Service from the late-nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. Over the recent centuries the Olympic Peninsula has seen immense change, yet still contains the largest and most diverse wilderness area in Washington. Rooney tells the forest's history from the designation of the Olympic Forest Reserve in 1897, through the intense industrial demand from a quickly growing local population and the impact of two world wars, the controversy around the creation of Olympic National Park in 1938, and up to the significant changes and practices introduced by the Multiple-use Act of 1960. Many of the vital, fundamental, social and environmental issues and decisions confronted a century ago still remain to be reckoned with today. Though he attributed the completion of Frontier Legacy to the many other thoughtful women and men who took photographs, contributed documentation, or simply cared and saved important maps and artifacts, Jack Rooney has made an indelible contribution to preserving the history of the Olympic National Forest and that of Olympic Peninsula.

Authors McClure and Mack assemble these fragments to create a portrait of Gifford Pinchot National Forest's history and provide a glimpse into its past through the eyes of the people who shaped it. Dozens of first-person accounts and photographs supplement the authors impressions throughout the pages. During the late 1930s, Forest Supervisor Kirk P. Cecil asked his rangers to interview local old timers and prepare written historical summaries of their districts. During the 1940s Cecil contacted and corresponded with many of the early forest rangers and guards, asking them to provide recollections of their experiences. Several excerpts from these communications have been included in this book and the authors have drawn liberally from a notebook of personnel data compiled by Cecil in the 1960s. Known by many names since its creation as a forest reserve over a century ago. Today Gifford Pinchot National Forest encompasses an area of 1,527,761 acres in south-central Washington State. Look back through the eyes of the native Americans, fur traders, explorers, and rangers to gain a deeper understanding of the land we now call Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
