This book contains a vast quantity of precious data about plants and bees and it is marvellous to see it in print again and available to new generations. Best of all would be if people selecting trees become aware of this useful information and consult it to inform their choice: nowadays we need whenever possible to choose species and cultivars with value to bees and other insect pollinators. 
The meticulous work of gathering data and compiling it into this useful book was a labour of love for Eva Crane and her team. It was the outcome of many years' scrutiny of the world's research literature - across many languages, and carefully recording any data pertaining to plants visited by honey bees. By the 1980's Eva Crane and her team had considerable data on thousands of plant species, each of them reported somewhere in the world to be major sources of honey. They then began the task of selecting from this lengthy list, those 467-plant species which could make it to the short list and be justifiably described as the 'Important world honey sources' of the book's title. For each plant species, data is provided on its economic and other uses, how much nectar / pollen and/or honeydew it provides, honey flow data (if any exist), and concerning the honey's chemical and physical properties. 
I was the youngest member of staff at the International Bee Research Association when Eva Crane was compiling the data for this fantastic book, and remember well the tremendous enthusiasm of the team, and endless discussion of which plants should make it to the short list. IBRA had recently acquired its first 'WordStar' word processor, and this was perfect for organising the vast data that had been collected, and permitted it to be readily searched, e.g. to compile lists of salt-tolerant plants, or of honey that granulates quickly. Much of the research that is cited here is from meticulous 20th century field work, watching bees and recording their behaviour - long before the digital era - and of course the observations remain valid. The entries may look at first impenetrable - but persevere to learn the codes and once you begin using this book, you will become addicted to consulting it and the interesting body of work upon which it is built.

The Anatomy and Dissection of the honey bee was first published in 1962 and yet this book is still the basis of teaching beekeepers the structure of the honey bee and how to dissect one to expose all the components of this amazing insect. Many of the drawings are original plates produced by Major Dade but of course the photographs are more recent and we must thank Dr Alan Potter of Brunel Microscopes for providing some of these in this edition.
As Dr Crane stated in her foreword to the first edition the book has been adopted my many organisations as the seminal text for learning and preparation for practical and theory examinations on honey bee anatomy. The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) and other National Beekeeping Associations recommend this book as key reading for their examinations and the National Diploma in Beekeeping (NDB) Examinations Board in UK use this extensively in their Short Courses and other educational events. Electron microscopes and modern optical microscopes have allowed high quality pictures of the anatomy of the honey bee to be illustrated but often Major Dade’s drawings are simpler and easier to understand.
In recent years there has been an upsurge in understanding the importance of all bees to the environment and the value of honeybees to the economy of the world. This, coupled with the devastating effects of ‘new’ pathogens such as Varroa destructor mean that beekeepers must be more aware of their colonies’ health to ensure their survival and fitness to pollinate crops and other plants.
This book should be a companion to all beekeepers and be available on their bookshelves for reference. International Bee Research Association also supply enlarged laminated copies of the illustrations in this book that will help as guides when dissecting bees. All the materials and microscopes described can be supplied by Brunel Microscopes in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England.

This book was derived from papers given at the meeting organised by the International Bee Research Association entitled: "Honey and healing: from the hive to the hospital" which was held at the University of Cardiff on 7 October 2000. The programme for the meeting stated: "Man has known the curative properties of honey from the earliest times. We may have forgotten, in latter years, just what medicinal benefits the golden harvest of the hive can bring. Perhaps with bacteria ever more resistant to antibiotics and viruses that seemingly defeat the medical world it is time to look once again to one of nature's own medicines that has a scientifically proven track record." The book was originally published in 2001, but has been out of print for a number of years. Sadly, Peter Molan, who contributed two chapters, died in 2015. In his obituary published in Bee World, his colleague Prof. Rose Cooper wrote: "I met Peter Molan by chance late in 1996 when I was collecting wound swabs from outpatients attending the Wound Healing Research Unit's clinic at the University Hospital of Wales. He was visiting his mother in Cardiff (where he was born and brought up) and had come to the hospital to promote the use of manuka honey in treating wounds. We chatted for about an hour and he offered to send me some samples of honey when he returned to New Zealand. I did my first experiments on the antibacterial activity of honey in 1997, and it marked the start of a wonderful collaboration that changed the course of my professional life." It is thus fitting that we republish this popular book.

Eva describes the history of honey starting from the evolution of plants and bees, then on to the harvesting of honey by humans over the past 10,000 years and its religious significance and beliefs.
There is a huge databank of information to facilitate further detailed study, making this an essential read for both teachers and students. Please note that Eva’s comments at the end of her preface refer to the original cover which as now been replaced in this 2019 reprint.
