Almost seventy years ago, Mr. Cliff D. Cater published the "Pioneer History of Wise County," and it is still one of the best county histories we have had the pleasure to study. We shall not try to compete with Mr. Cater, we only hope this book will add to his with many of the bits of history he did not have room to print, some he did not have access to, and perhaps bring his somewhat up to-date.Wise County in 1975, is a far cry from the pioneer atmosphere prevailing when Mr. Cates wrote his book. Horses are used more for pleasure than utility, and the ladies nearly all wear pants-- no self-respecting lady would have thought of such a thing in 1907! You will note the lack of stories of the businesses in Wise County, it is hoped there will be a Volume II, as there is just not room for everything we have in this publication.We are grateful to the descendants of Bianca Babb for giving consent to use her unpublished story; to Mrs. Sue Jean Cocanougher for the use of her Decatur Baptist College History; to Mrs. Peggy Logan for her lovely sketches; to Mrs. Etta Pegues for the use of her poetry; to Vesta Watson and Edith Hanna for their help in compiling the family histories, and to the other members of the Survey Committee for their help and support.
