Through several centuries there has been a lively interaction between mathematics and mechanics. On the one side, mechanics has used mathemat­ics to formulate the basic laws and to apply them to a host of problems that call for the quantitative prediction of the consequences of some action. On the other side, the needs of mechanics have stimulated the development of mathematical concepts. Differential calculus grew out of the needs of Newtonian dynamics; vector algebra was developed as a means to describe force systems; vector analysis, to study velocity fields and force fields; and the calculus of variations has evolved from the energy principles of mechan­ics. In recent times the theory of tensors has attracted the attention of the mechanics people. Its very name indicates its origin in the theory of elasticity. For a long time little use has been made of it in this area, but in the last decade its usefulness in the mechanics of continuous media has been widely recognized.

The pulse of life with the seasons is a classic theme of biology, equally cap turing every man's curiosity about early and late milestones of every year's cycle and the critical physiologist's inquiry into life's subtle signals and responses. Natural historians of ancient and renaissance time as well as today have charted the commonsense facts behind inspired traditions of poetry and practical rules for growing food and fiber. This volume brings together several ways of organizing the basic principles of phenology. These find order in the otherwise overwhelming mass of detail that captures our fleeting attention, like the daily newspaper, and then tends to fade into the overstuffed archives of history. Is this order so obvious and understandable that there is no longer any scien tific challenge to "phenology" as a tradition? Or does apparent simplicity mask a complex and ultimately baffling obstacle to the understanding of seasonality in even those few indicator plants and animals we know best, not to men tion the less known species or races making up the rest of each major land scape unit or ecosystem? Denying both these hasty opinions, we think that this volume well illustrates a range of questions and answers-from soundly established (but not trivial) doctrine to exciting inquiry about how ecosystems are organized.

This book is not an exhaustive survey of known information in the manner of a text-book -the subject is much too big for this to be possible in a relatively concise volume but presents a point of view. We are concerned ultimately with the analysis of tropical ecosystems, mainly forests, in terms of their constituent units, the individual trees. Many different approaches are possible in the analysis of tropical forests. A simple one is to treat the trees as obstacles which in a military sense intercept projectiles or are a hin drance to foot soldiers (ADDOR et aI., 1970). A similar ap proach might be adopted by an engineer confronted by a forest which has to be removed to permit road construc tion. The timber merchant is concerned with the ability of a forest to yield saleable lumber. The interest here is in the size of the larger trunks with some concern for the kinds of trees. At a less destructive level the scientist aims to compre hend the forest from many different points of view. The forester himself, in conjunction with the taxonomist, will wish to analyze the floristic composition of the forest and perhaps account for species diversity in an evolutionary time scale (e.g., FEDOROV, 1966; ASHTON, 1969). The evolu tionary biologist in his turn may be concerned with repro ductive strategies in forest trees (e.g., BAWA, 1974), espe cially in a comparative way.

This volume deals with theoretical, methodical and empirical aspects of the management of chronic psychotic patients. The possibilities for assessing this specific task of mental health care in terms of cost and effectiveness are examined. For this purpose the authors refer to social and economic implications of de-institutionalization, procedures for estimating the costs of treatment, public and private costs of selected treatment strategies and time-budget analyses of chronic psychotic patients. The contributions are interdisciplinary as well as international and will be of value to public health organisations, politicians and researchers alike.

The Psychology of Politics is an introduction to political psychology. The field has a long past, but as an organized discipline, it has a short history. The long past is detailed in Jaap van Ginneken's historical first chapter of the book. The short history of political psychology as an organized disci­ pline dates from 1978, when the International Society of Political Psychol­ ogy (ISPP) was founded (Stone, 1981, 1988). The formal establishment of an interdiscipline drawing upon various social sciences had numerous predecessors in the 20th century: Wallas's (1908) Human Nature in Politics, Harold Lasswell's Psychopathology and Politics in 1930, a book with the present title by Eysenck (1954), and The Handbook of Political Psychology, edited by the founder of the ISPP, Jeanne Knutson. Her Handbook defined the field at the time of its publication in 1973 (see espe­ cially Davies' chapter). The present revision of Stone's (1974) work is more modest in its aspira­ tions. It provides a selective introduction to the field, emphasizing topics that the authors believe to be representative and important. Many psycho­ logically relevant topics, such as political socialization, participation, voting behavior, and leadership, are not represented among our chapter titles.
