Former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the New Britain Museum of American Art, Dr. Timothy McLaughlin, has amassed a stunning collection of over forty paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, all focused on Connecticut and the Northeast region. Featuring works by masters of the Hudson River School and American Impressionism, as well as contemporary artists, this collection shows how various artists over the past two centuries have been inspired by the landscapes, people, and cities of Connecticut and the Northeast, and how their works reflect these sources of inspiration. This catalogue contains a statement by the collector himself, a main essay that explores the collection as a whole, and 30 object entries by local and national scholars and New Britain Museum of American Art staff.

Over seventy objects, chosen from the extensive holdings of the museum for their quality and topical interest, demonstrate the development and diversity of art by women in America from the early nineteenth century to the present day. Included are works by Sarah Miriam Peale, Lilly Martin Spencer, Mary Cassatt, Elizabeth Nourse, Georgia O'Keeffe, Isabel Bishop, Louise Nevelson, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Elizabeth Catlett, and others. The exhibition explores portraits, nudes, abstraction, modernity and the city, nature, identity, narrative, and written signs. Essays consider pertinent issues in each theme for art produced by women. The book also contains two essays tracing the history of women artists in America and sixteen object entries illuminating a selection of significant pieces. This exhibition and accompanying catalogue focus on Provincetown's legacy as an art colony, during the period from Charles W. Hawthorne's founding of the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899 to the present day. Covering more than 100 artists, this is the largest and most comprehensive survey of the art colony completed in over forty years. The catalogue is divided into nine sections that focus on various events in the art colony, such as Hans Hofmann and Forum 49, the establishment of the Tirca Karlis Gallery, and the founding of the Fine Arts Work Center. Essays by leading Provincetown scholars highlight the narrative of Provincetown's importance in America's art history. While many artists worked or lived in Provincetown for years, others "passed through" the art colony. As this catalogue shows, Provincetown's influence extended to many of the great artists of the twentieth century, including Avery, Baziotes, de Kooning, Demuth, Motherwell, Pollock, Rothko, and Warhol. This full color catalogue celebrates the works of Connecticut-born, African-American artist Charles Ethan Porter that documents a special exhibition of fifty-two paintings. Written by well-known scholar Hildegard Cummings, the catalogue documents the first major display of works by Porter. Porter painted mainly portraits, flowers, insects, fruit, and landscapes--subjects that became his signature style. He was well-regarded among critics and the public, and his work caught the eye of Samuel Clemens who introduced Porter and his work to influential circles both in the U.S. and abroad. Charles Ethan Porter was born in the late 1840s in Rockville, Connecticut. In 1871, he was accepted into the prestigious National Academy of Design in New York. He gave art lessons to support himself through school, then eventually opened a small studio in New York City. In the late 1870s, Porter moved back to Hartford, and his work began showing up in local exhibitions and art galleries. At this time he produced some of his better-known paintings. Porter died in 1923 having moved back to Rockville.
