This volume is a continuation of the publication of the correspondence of Sargon II begun in SAA 1. The letters published in this volume are of special interest because of the particular geographical area from which they originate. This area extends, in the shape of a broad crescent, roughly from the Euphrates of the Diyala river, surround and enclosing the Mesopotamian plain to the north and to the NE. From the geographical point of view, the various territories which lie in this wide area all share a common feature: they represent the transition from the alluvial plain or the piedmont to the highlands of Anatolia and Iran, such as the eastern Taurus or the Zagros chain.

The letters edited in this volume represent the correspondence of various priests and high temple officials in the Assyrian realm during the third through fifth decades of the seventh century BC. They consist chiefly of reports to Esarhaddon and Assurbanipal about cultic concerns and matters connected with the construction and renovation of temple edifices in the major cities of the Assyrian empire, both in the heartland and in the provinces. These fascinating letters throw light on the buildings, refurbishment, and maintenance of temples, the fashioning and installation of statues of the king, the provisioning of the cult, the performance of sacrifices, the rite of sacred marriage, and the processions of divine images.

This is the second of two volumes of the State Archives of Assyria devoted to the administrative archives. Like the previous volume, SAA 7, it includes texts from Nineveh, for the most part published originally by C.H.W. Johns in his Assyrian Deeds and Documents, but also in the Assyrian Doomsday Book by the same author. On the other hand, this volume differs markedly from the previous one regarding contents: the texts here are concerned in general with the provincial administration of the imperial provinces and with taxation. Although in recent years a number of the texts have been edited and commented on (by the editors themselves as well as by other scholars) for their importance in the study of the mechanisms of the imperial political and economic system, it may be useful to provide here an overview of the nature of all the documents included in the volume, whether better or less known, whether immediately meaningful or partially obscure.
