The underpowered twin jet fighter would prove, along with North American's FJ-1, the feasibility of operating jets from carriers. It was operated by VF-17A/VF-171, VF-172, VMF-122 and the "Flying Leathernecks" demonstration team as well as the reserves. 48 photos, 6 illustrations and 21 profiles are included.

The photos in this edition are black and white. First published in 1988, the RF-8 book is one of four volumes on the famous F-8 Crusader series. The Supersonic PhotoSader first appeared in December 1956. Ultimately 144 aircraft were produced and were operated by both the Navy and Marines. They were in continuous operations as Dets. on fleet carriers from 1957-1982 and continued on in the Reserves through 1984. In 1962 the RF-8 became famous during Operation Blue Moon when VMJ-2 and VFP-62 Crusaders documented the Cuban Missile Crisis by taking over 160,000 photos while logging over a 100 flight hours. The book covers the squadron histories of the RF-8 squadrons and its usage in Vietnam.

Vought's F-8 Crusader: Navy & Marine Rf-8 Photo-Recon Squadrons (Naval Fighters Series No 17)

The photos in this edition are black and white. First published in 1989, this volume puts forth the Marine squadron histories of Vought's infamous F-8 Crusader from 1958 through 1968. It covers the 14-active duty and 9-reserve Marine squadrons that flew it. In the Marines, the MiG Master was even used as a ground attack fast mover in Vietnam armed with up to 8-500lb bombs and Zuni rockets or even 2-1500lb iron bombs with Zuni rockets.

Vought's F-8 Crusader: Marine Fighter Squadrons (Naval Fighters Series No 18)

The photos in this edition are black and white. First published in 1990, this book is a squadron-by-squadron history of the "Last Gunfighter", Vought's F-8 Crusader. It covers the 69 Navy units that flew the "MiG Master" including squadron patches with additional pages on operating the Crusader in Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, F-8 squadrons deployed 59 times from carrier decks off Vietnam and were responsible for downing 16 MiG-17s, two MiG-21s, plus two probable MiG-17s. This is an excellent account of a true warrior. "When your out of F-8's your out of fighters." Over 600 photos.

Vought's F-8 Crusader: Navy Fighter Squadrons (Naval Fighters Series No 19)

First published in 1992, the Sea Dart book covers the engineering, development and testing of the Navy's only supersonic seaplane fighter ever built. The XF2Y-1 was the seaborne fighter component of the Navy's late 1940 "mobile Base" concept along with Convair's R3Y Tradewind seaborne heavy transport and Martin's P6M SeaMaster seabourne supersonic bomber. The concept was eventually abandoned with the twin Jet Sea Dart fighter and the P6M SeaMaster jet bomber being cancelled. The Sea Dart design was unique, as it used either one or two extendable skies for its take offs and landings. 4 of the 5 Sea Darts are still on display or in storage today. Over 130 b&amp;w photos plus 12-technical illustrations.

First published in 1994, the Martin AM Mauler book cover the development, testing, and squadron usage of the runner-up to the Navy's AD/A-1 Skyraider in its bomber-torpedo competition. Even though a runner-up, a 147 aircraft were produced and five fleet squadrons, VA-17A/VA-174, VA-44, VA-45, VA-84 and VA-85 operated them aboard carriers prior to going to the reserves. 18 AM-1Qs were produced and operated aboard carriers by VC-4. The big Martin was unique in being powered by the huge corncob R-4360 engine which gave it a larger and heavier combat load than the AD. Imagine a single engine airplane carrying 3-torpedoes and 12-250lb bombs! It was armed with 4-20mm cannons and could carry an APS-4 radar. 128-b&w photos, and 36-illustrations. Also includes a synopsis of the 121-aircraft accidents in the Mauler.

In 1947, both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy sponsored VTOL design studies called project Hummingbird. The rapid development of increasingly powerful powerplants had reached the point where a true VTOL aircraft was in the realm of possibility. The U.S. Navy's firsthand experiences with Japan's Kamikaze taught them the vulnerability of their great mobile peacekeepers, the carrier. Because of this experience the Navy felt that the only way to protect any naval presence in enemy waters was to equip all ships with a VTOL fighter.

The photos in this edition are black and white. WWII's 4-engine Martin Mars flying boat would be the World's largest aircraft weighing in at over 150,00 pounds until the Spruce Goose came along. Used as a transport, five production aircraft were built and used throughout the Pacific as the Navys heavy hauler into the mid-1950s when they were purchased and converted into fire bombers in Canada and used to this day. The five aircraft were named Philippine Mars, Marianas Mars, Marshall Mars, Hawaii Mars and Carolline Mars.
