Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. In India, he is recognized as the Father of the Nation. A British-educated lawyer, Gandhi first employed his ideas of peaceful civil disobedience in the Indian community s struggle for civil rights in South Africa. Upon his return to India, he led nationwide campaigns for the alleviation of poverty, for the liberation of women, for brotherhood amongst differing religions and ethnicities, for an end to untouchability and caste discrimination, and for the economic self-sufficiency of the nation, but above all for Swaraj-the independence of India from foreign domination. He famously led Indians in the disobedience of the salt tax on the 400 kilometre (248 miles) Dandi Salt March in 1930, and in an open call for the British to Quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned for many years on numerous occasions in both South Africa and India. He dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth, or Satya. He tried to achieve this by learning from his own mistakes and conducting experiments on himself. He called his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth.

The Message of the GitaEven in 1888-89 when I first became acquainted with the Gita I felt that it was not a historical work but that under the guise of physical warfare it described the duel that perpetually went on in the hearts of mankind and that physical warfare was brought in merely to make the description of the internal duel more alluring This preliminary intuition became more confirmed on a closer study of religion and the Gita A study of the Mahabharata gave it added confirmation I do not regard the Mahabharata as a historical work in the accepted sense The Adiparva contains powerful evidence in support of my opinion By ascribing to the chief actors superhuman or subhuman origins the great Vyasa made short work of the history of kings and their peoples The persons therein described may be historical but the author of the Mahabharata has used them merely to drive home his religious theme

The Message of the Gita

'Gandhiji's Autobiography' The translation had the benefit of Gandhiji's revision. "My purpose," writes Gandhiji in the Introduction of the book, "being to give an account of various practical applications of the principles of Truth and Non-violence, I have given the chapters the title of The Story of My Experiments with Truth. My purpose is to describe experiments in the science of Satyagrah, not to say how good I am. In judging myself I shall try to be as harsh as truth, as I want others also to be."

The proofs of the original edition were submitted to Ganhdhiji in 1944, and were read by him. A committee which he had appointed to scrutinize the compilation expressed the opinion that it would constitute "a new Gita, a new Bible." The book came out, with Gandhiji's apporval, in March 1945.
