Mipham Rinpoche, a 19th century Tibetan scholar and practitioner, gives a definite explanation of the Middle-way Instructions. For a few years of his life he stayed at the Ninth Thrangu Rinpoche's monastery where he was supplied with materials for his prolific writing. One of Mipham Rinpoche's encyclopedic works on Buddhism was the Gateway to Knowledge and it is from this text that the Middle-way Instructions came from. 
In this exposition Mipham Rinpoche explains the meditation techniques for developing compassion and expanding this state into the aspiration of bodhichitta. Milarepa, Tibet's greatest saint, had two major disciples: Gampopa, who established the monastic foundation of the Kagyu lineage and Rechungpa, who traveled to India and brought back profound teachings which were absorbed into several Kagyu lineages. 
Rechungpa's biography stand out because of the unorthodox unfolding of his realization. Rechungpa's pride and arrogance caused him to go against Milarepa's advice three times, putting his practice at risk. Even with this obstacle, Rechungpa's undying devotion to Milarepa served as the cause for enlightenment as evidenced by Rechungpa's achievement of rainbow body at his death.

This teaching by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche on Penkarwa's "Short Prayer to Dorje Chang" is one of Rinpoche's first published teachings. It was given by Rinpoche at the request of His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa especially for the benefit of western students, so that they may understand the nature of the path. Here Rinpoche gives a verse by verse commentary, which covers all aspects of the path and the practice according to the tradition of Mahamudra. He also gives a brief history of the lineage and the early lineage masters.

The Mahayana path of Buddhism requires the development of wast loving-kindness and compassion. The foundation for developing impartial compassion for all sentient beings is based on understanding the emptiness of self and the emptiness of phenomena.
