Patterns and Poetry: No Robes from the Lucy Truman Aldrich Collection, Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, is a beautiful and informative publication on the RISD Museum's collection of costumes for the Japanese No theater. This collection, arguably the finest in the United States, was assembled largely on the spot in Japan during the 1920's by Rhode Islander Lucy Truman Aldrich, sister-in-law of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The 47 robes came to the Museum by gift and bequest from Miss Aldrich herself and represent all catagories of No costume. Four essays document the history of the collection, including Miss Aldrich's encounter with Chinese bandits; poetic allusion in the imagery of the robes; the traditional methods of making No robes; and the evolution of No costume over 650 years. Individual entries with color illustrations discuss each of the 47 objects.

Pressing On: The Graphic Art of Wilmer Jennings is the first publication to examine a large body of work of Wilmer Jennings (American, 1910-90), who studied under Hale Woodruff while earning a degree from Morehouse College, Atlanta.  Jennings then came to Rhode Island School of Design for further training as a jewelry designer, painter, and printmaker.  He stayed in Rhode Island and designed jewelry for Imperial Pearl Company while continuing to work on his art.  Jennings achieved artistic recognition primarily for his intimate wood engravings. He represents the third generation of African American artists active in the state.

This is beautifully designed book looks at a close circle of artists and intellectuals portrayed by Edgar Degas in the late summer of 1885. On the heels of Ludovic Halevy's election to the Academie Francaise, Degas joined his close friend's family for a holiday on the Normandy coast. Inspired by group photographs, he staged an eccentric portrait composed of Halevy and his son, Daniel, young painters Jacques-Emil Blanch, Henri Gervex, and Walter Sickert, and an elusive man of taste, Albert Boulanger-Cave. Four essays examine the creation of the enigmatic portrait and narrate the intense and conflicting friendships it embodied. Maureen C.O'Brien presents the portrait as a performance of friendship: Jane Roberts explores Jacques Emil-Blanche's lifelong attachment to Dieppe: Anna Gruetzner Robins addresses the presence of British painter Walter Sickert: Linda Catano analyzes the physical construction of the large pastel portrait and its place in Degas's technical development of this medium.
