The origins of this book are in my first attempts to understand psychology as a post-war student in the Cambridge of the late 1940s. Sir Frederic Bartlett and his colleagues in the Psychology Department were talking and writing about the concept of the skill as the fundamental unit of behaviour. This made entire sense to me but not apparently to very many other people because the movement dwindled rapidly with the retirement of Sir Frederic in 1952. It got lost within performance studies which were essentially behaviouristic and stimulus-response in origin, a quite different style of thinking from the gestalt approach of skill psychology. This is not a simple dichotomy of course and skill psychology does go some way towards the analytic approach in accepting that a science needs to have a basic element, a unit from which the complexities of real behaviour can be constructed. into which it can be analysed and in terms of which it can be described and understood. The trick is to pick the right unit and I think that skills is an appropriate unit for human behaviour. Note the plural, although these units are elements they are not identical any more than the ninety-odd elements of the physical world are identical. The issue is sometimes clarified by considering the analogy with the attempt to describe a house. The simplest observable elements here are the brick. the piece of stone or the piece of wood.

Orotic Acid: Synthesis, Biochemical Aspects and Physiological Role

This volume reviews a series of different publications dealing with orotic acid. Orotic acid was isolated from cow's milk 75 years ago by Biscaro and Belloni in Italy. Fifty years later again Italian scientists described the growth-promoting activity of orotic acid in vitamin B -deficient animals. 12 Orotic acid is the precursor of pyrimidine nucleotides which are involved in many biochemical reactions: UTP and CTP, as substrates for RNA polymerase, and UDP sugars, as substrates for carbohydrate containing macromolecules, e.g. glycogen, glycoproteins and glycolipids. The biosynthesis of these pyrimidines is well regulated. Disturbance of the biosynthetic pathway or trapping of individual pyrimidine nucleotides may lead to severe metabolic and structural alterations of cells. Synthesis, biochemical aspects and physiological role are reviewed in nine chapters. In the last two decades increasing interest in orotic acid came from several studies showing protective or therapeutic or beneficial effects of this compound in different kinds of organ injuries: various forms of hepatic insufficiency, myocardial infarction, encephalopathy, memorization pro cesses, mentioned in Chapters 8 and 9. At the end of this overview a Bibliography in an alphabetical order with 673 references may give further insight in this topic.

<p>Because of increasing worldwide interest in the subject, a decision was made to coordinate the papers presented at the First European Symposium on Hysteroscopy, held in Antwerp, Belgium, in September 1982, into a text on hysteroscopy, including its indications, techniques, and complications. The Organising Committee called on Dr. Louis G. Keith of Northwestern University, Chicago, illinois USA, to edit all of the papers and to prepare them for publication as a multi-author textbook rather than as a haphazard collection of the proceedings of a meeting. Dr. Keith also supervised the many details of preparing the manuscript for publication, including the task of copy editing. The speakers at the Symposium were all eminent European hysteroscopists; the most up-to-date information was presented, assuring the current nature of the scientific data. By way of introduction (Part I), a historical survey of the development of hysteroscopy is presented. The material is then divided into several parts. Part II concerns the technical aspects of hysteroscopy. Part m includes the different clinical applications of hysteroscopy. Part IV concerns special applications of hysteroscopy, and the Conclusion (Part V) contains the remarks of two distinguished American guests. Dr. Alvin M. Siegler presented a special lecture on Jan Palfijn (Chapter 29), and Dr. Louis G. Keith was asked to discuss the relationship between art and medicine at a banquet at the Rubens Mansion in Antwerp (Chapter 30).</p>
