Sivastotravali is a collection of stray verses composed by Utpaladeva simply to ventilate his feelings, thoughts and experiences during various stages of his spiritual life. It was discovered by his admirers in total disorder after the author gave up his mortal coil. Since they contained a wealth of spiritual wisdom they were taken up by one Visvavarta and compiled into twenty stotras, and later commented upon by Rajanaka Ksemaraja, the authorís great-granddisciple. The text contains spontaneous outpourings of a master mind given to the discovery of the truth of existence. They constitute an authentic saga of one of the greatest spiritual adventures in the world. Of all sages and saints, who appeared in Kashmir from time to time, the name of Utpaladeva commands the greatest reverence, not only because he had keen philosophic insight or poetic genius but also because he had attained direct realization of the Supreme Reality. He was steeped in Siva consciousness, and his sayings as such have been acclaimed as bearing the stamp of authority even by such teachers of eminence as the great Acarya Abhinavagupta. Of all his works the present one enjoys greatest popularity among the masses.

The Rgveda, the oldest literary record of the Aryan race and the sacred book of the Hindus, has very few authentic translations in English. Most of the translations are only the imitations of interpretations which the mediaeval Hindus, as represented by Sayana, have offered. Griffith`s is the only translation which, though guided by Sayana, ventures to deviate from him widely and frequently. It may be ranked as an independent translation hitherto made in English. But this century old translation needed re-editing, necessitating a new edition incorporating improvements without disturbing the original. In this edition the Greek letters have been romanized wherever there are references in the footnotes from the Greek language. The system of transcription has been modernized even in regard to Avestan words in the footnotes, following the system of Bartholomae. The complete translation has been published in a single volume for the convenience of the reader. Each and every figure in the index has been duly checked and revised.

Kalhana s Rajatarangini is the most famous historical poem which records the oldest and fullest history of the legendary kings of Kashmir as well as gives accounts of the Kashmirian kings of the historical period. It consists of eight chapters and draws upon earlier sources, notably the Nilamata Purana. Sir Stein recognising the inestimable value of the only work of its kind, succeeded in publishing the critical edition of the text as early as in 1892. The interest of this treatise for Indian history generally lies in the fact that it represents a class of Sanskrit composition which comes nearest in character to the chronicles of Medieval Europe and of the Muhammadan East. Together with the later Kashmir chronicles which continue Kalhana s narrative, it is practically the sole extant specimen of this class. Its author s object is to offer a connected narrative of the various dynasties which ruled Kashmir from the earliest period down to his own time. The final portion of the work, considerable both in extent and historical interest, is devoted to the accounts of the events which the author knew by personal experience or from the relation of living witnesses. These events are narrated from the point of view of a more or less independent chronicler and by no means the purely panegyrical object of the court-poet.
