The views of Windsor Castle painted by the brothers Thomas and Paul Sandby during the second half of the eighteenth century are some of the most exquisite and best loved British watercolours ever produced. Forty-seven of these from the British Royal Collection, arranged to form a complete topographical sequence, are illustrated here in colour and discussed together with the architectural history of the Castle, the oldest continuously occupied fortress in the western world. More than one hundred further illustrations, including photographs and maps, help to supplement the Sandbys' vivid record of life in the Castle during the eighteenth century and to trace the brothers' artistic development.

John Singleton Copley is well known in America as the creator of the finest portraits of the Colonial era. Less well known is the fact that he left America in 1774, when the impending armed struggle between the Colonies and England threatened to destroy his livelihood, and settled in London to pit himself ambitiously against the Old Masters and the English giants of the day. Copley's English career was long and brilliant - and represents the most important period of his working life. During the forty-one years he spent in England, Copley created his great masterpieces of history painting and portraiture that stand as key monuments of British painting.From the earliest days of his career in London Copley realized that he would have to do everything possible to stand out in a crowded field of painters and create works that would bring him instant notice. This he did with his first great English picture, The Copley Family (1776-77) and, even more dramatically, with the landmark Watson and the Shark (1778). He quickly mastered the elements of the fashionable English style of painting, exchanging the tight and linear handling of the Colonial period for one more fluid and expressive. By the 1780s Copley was reckoned one of the most important painters working in England, a clear rival to his compatriot Benjamin West. With his masterpiece, The Death of Major Pierson (1784), Copley assumed a place of primacy in the field of history painting.While William L. Pressly gives a balanced, up-to-date exposition of Copley's English career, Emily Ballew Neff examines his masterpiece, The Death of Major Pierson, in particular detail, and is the author of the catalogue of his major English works. This is a long overdue study of this important painter.

William Turnbull has been making sculpture and paintings for fifty years. This book is the first publication devoted to the artist for twenty-two years. It documents his entire career and is published to coincide with an important exhibition of Turnbull's work at the Serpentine Gallery, London. It contains an introduction by the curator of the exhibition, David Sylvester; and an essay by Patrick Elliott, Assistant Keeper at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.A variety of different sources have inspired Turnbull's sculpture, ranging from pre-classical and non-Western idols and ritual objects to highly modern, industrial products. Kings, Queens, Emperors, Princes and Republics have from Biblical times rewarded their citizens and foreign friends with tokens of gratitude. Since the Crusades these have gradually developed into an institutionalized form of knighthood, which bound subjects to their rulers and cemented alliances. From the 14th century these awards have been associated with insignia. Collars, badges, stars and, uniquely in England, a garter became symbols of an Order. Made of gold and silver, enamelled and in some cases ornately encrusted with precious stones, the pieces have been a foil for the jeweller's art.The British Royal Collection has the most extensive holdings of insignia in the world - not only the wide array of British orders but also the foreign orders of royal relatives, friends and diplomatic allies. Orders from over thirty countries are here represented and discussed. Each one has been specially photographed in colour for this book and all are shown full size. Most pieces date from the 18th and 19th centuries, earlier pieces having been broken up as fashions changed and the need for the stones for other jewellery dictated. Stephen Patterson also shows how the practices of giving orders, with their roots in Christian chivalry, could be adopted by the non-Christian monarchies of Africa and Asia as well as the new monarchies of the Americas, particularly Brazil and Hawaii.
