This exhibition at Boston College's McMullen Museum of Art (February-May 1999) takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying the style, subject matter, and functions of religious art in Italy between 1580-1680. The conceptual centerpiece of the exhibition is Caravaggio's recently rediscovered The Taking of Christ. The catalogue reproduces in color all of the paintings in the exhibition and includes a collection of essays that analyze how some of the period's most important artistic, religious, and social concerns are encapsulated within the various images. Medieval art survives today as fragments of larger works, usually displayed by historical period, geographic location, artistic medium, or iconographic theme. Fragmented Devotion is the first exhibition to explore the meanings these fragments have in our understanding of medieval art and religious life from the Middle Ages to the present. Most of these objects have never been shown before in North America, and many have not been published since the beginning of the twentieth century.The catalog includes essays by historians, art historians, philosophers, and theologians. The writings discuss the meanings these objects had in medieval religious practice. The essays then go on to trace how those original meanings changed when the objects were collected and installed by Alexander Schnutgen within the larger context of Catholicism and nationalism in nineteenth century Germany. Finally, the contributors look at the 1920s and 1930s when the objects were installed in a museum-like setting and consider this installation in light of the developments in medieval art history and the policies of national socialism.

The American West has had an enormous influence on the nation's imagination, including its fine art. From the Western Realists—as epitomized by the Cowboy Artists of America's mission to produce "authentic representations of life in the West"—to the Western Modernists—who introduced not only modern visual languages but a range of political and ethnic perspectives—Cowboys, Indians, and the Big Picture brings together a range of images to present a more complex picture of the American West. Section one surveys art from the collection of John McMullen's collection of accomplished Western Realists; section two presents new images of cowboys to investigate the mythology that has developed around them. Section three features work by Native American artists who seek to express their version of the history of western settlement and to articulate the complexities of living in two postmodern cultures, and the final portion of the catalog presents a changed western landscape, bearing layers of social and environmental history. In presenting this body of work, the exhibition presents many Wests, offering an alternative to the debate about which images and styles represent the American West as it was—and is in the present day.

From its earliest history, Ireland has been contested land, claimed by waves of invaders, each attempting to inscribe and possess the island territory. The éire/Land exhibition, to be held at the McMullen Museum from February to May 2003, is the first major art exhibition to examine this theme. From medieval topographical surveys and Celtic artifacts to nineteenth-century landscapes and the expressionist art of the present day, éire/Land collects pieces that collectively reveal Ireland's contested past—including works by Dierdre O'Mahony, Jack Butler Yeats, Sean Keating, and architect Brian Tolle. Drawing on original research by prominent international scholars and by the largest and most distinguished Irish studies faculty in North America, this catalog relates those works and artifacts to new scholarship in a variety of disciplines, lending Ireland's visual history the cultural, historical, and political context it deserves.

Chilean painter Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren, a major figure in the twentieth-century Surrealist movement, was one of the few Latin American artists to achieve international fame. Living an itinerant life in North and South America as well as Europe, Matta established connections with many renowned artists and writers who were his contemporaries. The essays in Matta: Making the Invisible Visible utilize Matta as a microcosmic example that challenges accepted perceptions of Latin American artists and the reception of their work. Five distinguished scholars analyze various aspects of Roberto Matta's life and career. The essay topics include a tracing of Matta's position in the Surrealist and the Abstract Expressionist movements, an exploration of the Latin American Catholic impulse in his work, and an exposition of the connections between Matta's work and the writings of Freud. The volume also features full-color reprints of some of Matta's most brilliant works.
