From Back Home documents a rural Sweden far removed from the big city. Photographers Anders Petersen (born 1944) and JH Engström (born 1969) both hail from the rural county of Värmland in Sweden, and have returned there to produce this marvelous collaboration. The result is an intimate journey among people, experiences and landscapes spanning over 300 pages. Engström writes of the project: "The land between Klarälven River and the chestnut tree at Ekallén is full of little hard memories of sad and lonely times, but there is also a streak of warm confidence that runs all the way up to Älgsjövallen, a place of fairytale creatures and inquisitive moose. I am carrying my camera, shooting these old dreams through the foliage. It means my memories can never be destroyed because they no longer end in themselves." And Petersen writes: "I’ve returned to something my body and emotions recognize."

A home isn't simply the sum of its rooms and furniture, but also a number of larger or smaller details. To prove this, illustrator Annika Huett and photographer Ulf Huett Nilsson went on a journey from the north to the south of Sweden, peeking into people's homes. What they found was an inspiring myriad of personal details―from cramped shelves of kitchen cupboards, to toilet-paper holders, plants, outlets and coat hangers. The pair organized their book by rooms―kitchens, bedrooms, children's rooms, bathrooms and entryways―so it's easy to flip to a section to glean inspiration for one's own home decoration scheme. With a range of photos, from large landscapes capturing entire rooms, to small close-ups of the little knickknacks one might normally overlook, the volume establishes an aesthetic uniquely Swedish and welcoming in its personality and warmth. The details captured are neither new nor expensive, nor are they the fashion-inspired, cutting-edge design that has come to characterize some corners of Scandinavia. Instead, they are personal, homey and almost impossible to replicate―and it is these qualities that make this compilation such a quirky delight. An astounding labor of love by scholar Björn Meidal and photo editor Bengt Wanselius, The Worlds of August Strindberg is a visual biography of Sweden’s most influential writer and playwright. The book’s biographical narrative (by Meidal, one of the world’s foremost Strindberg scholars) is illustrated with more than 500 archival photographs and ephemera relating to Strindberg and his world: Stockholm and environs, Berlin, Paris, portraits of--and self-portraits by--Strindberg and a wealth of images documenting theatrical performances. Across 15 chapters we follow Strindberg’s life and creative evolution: his novels and plays, his romantic encounters, his friends and enemies, his precarious mental health, his scientific pursuits, his study of occultism, his painting and photography and his extensive travels around Europe. Post Scriptum is the largest monograph to date on one of Sweden’s most beloved photographers. Founder of the legendary photography school Fotoskolan in Stockholm in 1962, and an inspiration to two generations of photographers, Christer Strömholm (1918–2002) was one of the first Swedish photographers to attain international prominence. Living in both Sweden and France, he first won acclaim with his photo book Poste Restante, which he followed up with Vännerna från Place Blanche (The Friends from Place Blanche)--portrayals of transsexuals in 1960s Paris. His images from his travels in Japan, Spain and the United States are also widely admired. This volume includes these and numerous other bodies of work, including his portraits of artists such as Duchamp, Breton, Ernst, Giacometti, Klein, Rauschenberg, Spoerri and others, compiling nearly 270 of Strömholm’s best photographs.

Anders Petersen is one of Europe’s most beloved documentary photographers. His black-and-white portraits, often of persons at the fringes of society-- prostitutes, transvestites, drunks and drug addicts--evince a rare compassion and warmth, and his images of lovers (one famous example of which adorns the cover of Tom Waits’ Rain Dogs) have come to constitute recurrent motifs throughout his oeuvre, expressing his "exaltation of humanity" (as a recent exhibition was titled). The 30 or so books Andersen has published over the course of his career have become an important part of the photo-book canon--most famously the 1978 book Café Lehmitz, which depicted Hamburg’s seedy Reeperbahn in the late 1960s and 70s. In addition, Hasse Persson, former head of the Hasselblad Center and former director of the Borås Art Museum in Sweden, contributes a concise biography of Petersen’s life and methodology. An essay by Urs Stahel--curator, art critic and director of the Fotomuseum Winthertur in Zürich--further illuminates Petersen’s photography from an international perspective.
Anders Petersen was born 1944 in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1967 he began photographing the Café Lehmitz in Hamburg, where, in 1970, he held his first solo exhibition behind the bar, with 350 photographs nailed to the wall. In 1973 Petersen published his first photo book, Gröna Lund, which depicted an amusement park in Stockholm. Swedish photographer Anders Petersen was elected Photographer of the Year at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2003. In 2007, he was one of the four world finalists in the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize.

Sune Jonsson (1930-2009) spent most of his life in the county of Västerbotten in the north of Sweden, where he documented the agrarian lifestyles he saw disappearing in the wake of an increasingly urban and industrial society. Subject to the whims of harsh weather, unpredictable seasons and often infertile soil, these men and women lived in constant states of flux: homes were impermanent, self-built structures, crops were few, and animals fewer. Jonsson published his work in a series of 25 photo books, which began in 1959 with Byn med det blå huset (The Village with the Blue House) and ended almost 50 years later with And Time Becomes a Wondrous Thing (2007). These volumes were not solely photographic works: complementing his black-and-white documentary-style pictures were Jonsson's written narratives, a poetic mix of fact and fiction gleaned from interviews with his subjects and combined with his own political and philosophical concerns. Sune Jonsson: Life and Work not only republishes some of the most powerful photographs Jonsson took over the course of his lengthy career, but also provides intimate insight into the artist's historical, literary and social interests. The neck exists in the background, in the shadow of the face. In this book, Thomas Wagstrom has photographed, with tenderness, more than 50 necks of different ages and characters. Karl Ove Knausgard contributes a compelling essay, The Other Side of the Face, about our most vulnerable yet unchangeable body part. A neck is in time, belongs to time, but is not formed by it. If these photos could have been taken ten thousand years ago, they would have looked the same.

In 1977, at the height of the disco craze, a club opened at 254 West 54th Street in New York City. Studio 54 was―and, arguably, remains―the world's most renowned and legendary disco. Regularly attended by celebrities such as Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Taylor, Mick Jagger, Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones, Michael Jackson, Calvin Klein, Elton John, John Travolta, Brooke Shields and Tina Turner, the club fostered an atmosphere of unadulterated hedonism for New York's art and fashion set. Hasse Persson and his camera were frequent club guests from 1977–80. The images he photographed there have become legendary, capturing the club's famed revelers, dancers in costume and general, drunken exhilaration―and yet, incredibly, Studio 54 marks the first time in history that they have seen publication. Almost 35 years after the club's unceremonious and sudden closure, this beautiful hardback volume superbly documents the zeitgeist. Hasse Persson (born 1942) has had a long career as a photojournalist. Though Swedish born, he spent nearly a quarter century, from 1967 to 1990, working in New York. He has published five books on America and his photographs have appeared in such publications as The New York Times, Time, Newsweek and Life. He worked as the artistic director of the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg and today he is the artistic director of Strandverket Konsthall in Marstrand, Sweden.
