Humour as a competence inherent in all human beings defies description and its huge variety, forms and faces have always engendered curiosity. For centuries people have attempted to pinpoint the essence of humour. The contributors to this volume, however, restrict their study of humour to the written and oral literatures of South Asia. They approach the problems not only intutively, from their own sense of humour, but go beyond that out of a recognition that humour as "performance" is culture specific and cannot, therefore, always be comprehended on the spot. Several contributors cast their work in various theoretical frameworks, particularly theories of humour. The volume contains a broad spectrum of essays on the subject in modern and premodern, in classical and folk, and in written and oral literatures from almost all corners of the subcontinent. They treat the subject from a multitude of perspectives and offer background of different theories of humour. With one exception, the contributions have a common characteristic: they deal with material that has not been explored so far in research. These empirical studies are, therefore, the first step towards a theoretical analysis of humour in South Asia. the multi-regional coverage of papers opens up potential for comparative research on humour in the literature and verbal arts of contemporary South Asia.

Roger Blench gives us an overview of teh languages in South Asia. Shinde et al. present a report on Ghaggar exploration and the excavation at Mitathal, Girwad and Farmana.

About the Author      Toshiki Osada is a Professor at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN)., Kyoto and the leader of Indus Project since 2007. He is a linguist working on South Asian Languages, especially the Munda languages spoken in Jharkhand. He has edited the books titled Indus Civilization: Text and Context, vol.1 (2006), vol.2 (2009) and Linguistics, ARchaeology and the Human Past in South Asia (2009), all published from Manohar. Akinori Uesugi is a research scholar attached to the Indus Project since 2007. He has a long experience of several excavations in South Asia and specialized on Harappan archaeology.</p>

This is the third volume in Current Studies on the Indus Civilization. It contains four papers, Jeewan Singh Kharakwal and others have presente4d the second season's report of excavation at Kaner, Kachchh, Gujarat in the season of 2006-2007. In addition to this main portion of report, P.P. Joglekar and Pankaj Goel have reported on the fauna analysis at Kanmer and Professors Rajaguru and G. Deo Have contributed a preliminary report on the geological issues in the environment of Kachchh area. Moreover, GIS archaeology is applied to the Kanmer site by Teramura and others. Professor Peter Underhill has given us a paper on DNA analysis of human genetics.
