Dr. Ross is unusual in being a poet and a scientist.  The two are not coincidental.  He has published a story called The Gross Anatomy Lab in a literary journal and poetry in The Lancet.  One of his aphorisms is: Against science, against man.  But the complete title of the series is "One Hundred Aphorisms: On the Nature of the Spirit."  There is no contradiction: on the contrary, the connection is shown to be a necessary one.  Here is a practicing psychiatrist who knows that his work, in poetry or in the clinic, has to do both with precision and with the spirit. Some of these poems are fanciful and occasionally phantasmagoric but the most characteristic work uses the resources of verse trenchantly and effectively for the sake of getting things said.  In this too Dr. Ross is unusual: he has a number of things to say.  They range from comments on poetry and the arts, and evocations of the religions, to observations of people, and medical thinking.  Dr. Ross can also be, sometimes disconcertingly, comic in all these areas. The collection demonstrates that English verse can still be used memorably for writing about life, the life of the end of the twentieth century.

Songs For Two Children is a 1000-line poem written in iambic pentameter couplets. The poem is addressed to his two oldest children. In it Dr. Ross explains his theory of human energy fields and the role of dissociation in western civilization. Dr. Ross lived in the Canadian Arctic from 1970-1975, and again in the summers of 1976 and 1977. He spent three winters there without running water in his home, and one without electricity. During these years, he spent countless hours in the bush, hunting, hiking and studying the energy fields of the wilderness. He also observed and participated in the industrial and political life of the North, and read widely in anthropology. In Portrait of Norman Wells, Dr. Ross provides seven descriptions of the small industrial town of Norman Wells, each told by a different character. Together, the chapters provide a composite picture of life in the Canadian Arctic in the early 1970's.

In Structural Dissociation, Dr. Ross proposes a modification of Van Der Hart, Nijenhuis, and Steele's theory of structural dissociation. Rather than requiring an emotional personality (EP) to be present in all cases, Dr. Ross suggests that a dissociated compartment could hold a wounded inner child or ego state (an EP), but also simply a thought, feeling, impulse, memory or sensation, without there being a separate entity with its own sense of self. Expanding the model in this way allows for the inclusion of many different DSM-5 disorders within the same structure and process, and thereby leads to an integrated treatment plan for the extensive comorbidity that often accompanies complex dissociative disorders. The modified version of structural dissociation supports the use of dissociative disorders treatment techniques for many different disorders, addictions and self-defeating behaviors.

Structural Dissociation: A Proposed Modification of the Theory

Beginning at age thirteen, Karen Wetmore was subjected to horrific treatment in Vermont State Hospital and related facilities. Through years of investigative journalism, and numerous Freedom of Information Act requests, she was able do document that she was a victim of secret CIA mind control experiments as an adolescent, and of sexual abuse by one of her psychiatrists. Karen's psychiatrists included Robert Hyde, M.D., who was cleared at TOP SECRET as the contractor on CIA LSD experiments conducted under MKULTRA Subprojects 8, 10, 63, and 66. Karen calls for an investigation into the nearly 3000 deaths at Vermont State Hospital from 1952 to 1973, when CIA money was pouring into the hospital. These deaths may have provided cover for terminal experiments conducted at the hospital.
