By developing an Eastern existential understanding of death from the perspective of Zen Buddhism, Bushido (the Way of the Samurai), and Japanese haiku poets, this book articulates an ethics of sincerity between the contemplative-meditation practice of mindfulness and the three Buddhist characteristics of existence: impermanence, suffering, and non-substantiality. Through an examination and discussion of the six perfections of Buddhism, karma and enlightenment, the samurai virtues of Bushido, and the Japanese aesthetic masterfully expressed in the nature, travel, and death poems of haiku poets (a mixture of Zen and mono no aware), readers may gain a deeper appreciation of the death-centered character ethics, or art of living, Scalambrino calls “living in the light of death.”

F.W.J. Schelling (1775-1854) believed he had found, in the ancient initiation rites performed on the Greek island of Samothrace, the information lost to modernity with which to decode the "the original system of belief" celebrated and preserved in the Sacred Mysteries of the ancient Greeks, that is: the Dionysian, the Eleusinian, the Orphic, and the Samo-Thracian. The Sacred Mysteries revered the cosmos as the revelation of divinities communicating through nature. This origin-al revelation illuminates the mystery of the unified spiritual system of nature in which human reality participates. "On the Divinities of Samothrace" (1815) was originally an address delivered to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, and is counted by scholars as the beginning of the final "existential" phase of Schelling's philosophy. For, the philosophical ground of the sacred teachings is that we exist (ex-sistare) by "standing-out-of" the primal eternally-cyclical nature of the cosmos and into chronological time: a teaching not completely unlike the Amor Fati of Nietzsche's Eternal Return. Thus, this essay invokes the nature of indeterminate pre-history as more original than rational characterizations of time. And, yet, despite the philosophical depth into which Schelling thinks, his essay is strikingly lucid and concise. This publication includes a new translation of Schelling's essay, along with its exposition and discussion, by Frank Scalambrino (2019).

The term "existentialism" was coined in the 1940s. Whereas other books regarding existentialism merely repeat the platitudes that "There is no such thing as existentialism" or that "The term 'existentialism' has no coherent meaning," this two-volume set actually answers the question "What is existentialism?" Volume I identifies the seven (7) principles of existentialism and the necessary and sufficient conditions for a philosophy to be existential, and introduces readers to the depth of the problem by showing how the question "What is existentialism?" can be answered in multiple ways, all of which are provided in this two-volume set. Vol. I, then, provides the "archaeological" answer to the question by showing the philosophical framework existentialism inherited from transcendental philosophy. Vol. I also provides the "genealogical" answer by tracing the history of the thematization of this framework through German Romanticism, concluding with an illustration of how the major existential philosophers: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, and Marcel, expressed and developed the principles of existentialism. Volume II provides a discussion of essential distinctions with which to correctly understand, and formulate thoughts about, existentialism, for example, discussions of existentialism as a kind of character ethics, existentialism as a critique of Descartes' philosophy, the difference between existential individuality and modern subjectivity, and a discussion of the "moment of vision." What Is Existentialism? Vol. II: Essential Distinctions & Conclusion

This is the first time Arthur Schopenhauer's extended essay "On Philosophy at the Universities" has been published outside of its inclusion in the first volume of Parerga and Paralipomena - which has only been published in English, in its entirety, twice: first by Oxford and subsequently by Cambridge. This publication includes a new translation, by Frank Scalambrino, of Schopenhauer's extended essay, "On Philosophy at the Universities," along with Scalambrino's exposition and summary, and a graphic intended as a memory aid and illustration of Schopenhauer's relation to Kant's revolutionary position in the history of Western philosophy.
