Carte Blanche is a groundbreaking collection of the work of Canada’s best photographers, selected by a jury of renowned arts professionals. This unprecedented showcase displays the remarkable—but rarely acknowledged—range of photographic talent in Canada.
 Internationally recognized photographers such as Edward Burtynsky, Yuri Dojc, Janieta Eyre, Angela Grauerholz, Rita Leistner, Laura Letinsky, Arnaud Maggs, John Massey, and Christopher Wahl are published alongside the most exciting emerging talents across all genres—fine art, documentary, photojournalism, and edi-torial and commercial photography. Douglas Coupland, whose work appears in the fine art category, contributes a thoughtful and timely foreword to the book.
 Carte Blanche is the first Canadian photography compendium of its kind, published by Canada’s only charitable arts publishing house, The Magenta Foundation. Carte Blanche will change the perceptions of Canadians—and the world—about photographic achievement in this talented country.
 A few artists featured in Carte Blanche will be exhibiting their work in the United States. Jim Breukelman will be in the Whatcom Museum of History &amp; Art in Bellingham, Washington, from January 15, 2006–September 15, 3006. Louie Palu can be found in Boston’s Griffin Museum from November 30, 2006–January 14, 2007. 2nd captures contestants and competitors following the announcement that they have not won first prize. This gently ironic and at times humorous work explores the moments after personal hopes have been dashed. The project is about expectation and failure in the world of modern competitions. Loss and disappointment are the norm for a majority of competitors, even if the discrepancy between first and second place is minute.
All the subjects were photographed moments after they had stepped down from the podium or immediately following announcement of their standings.
The foreword is written by Susan Bright, an independent writer, lecturer, and curator. She is the former curator of photographs at the National Portrait Gallery and director of the Association of Photographers Gallery.

He has spent nearly twenty years working in arts publishing, and he is currently the editor of the British Journal of Photography, the world’s longest running photography magazine. He also regularly attends photo festivals as a portfolio reviewer and nominates/judges for numerous photo prizes, including the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, the Sony World Photography Awards, PDN Annual, and Photolucida’s Critical Mass.

Flash Forward 2009 (Flash Forward: Emerging Photographers from Canada, the United Kingdom)

Taken over the past three decades throughout Europe and North America, these photographs are of age-old landscapes; historical treasures of architecture nestled in the countryside and rusting industrial sites reclaimed by nature. Robert Bourdeau is deeply interested in how certain structures lose their identity and take on other feelings and ambiguities, and at other times become guardians or sentinels of physical and emotional space. He is also fascinated by the dark mysticism of medieval architecture and by brooding landscapes, the exactness of his photography disclosing the hidden geometry of nature. Most of his photographs are contact printed, either from an 11-by-14-inch or an 8-by-10-inch negative, a method that allows for a minimal loss of definition in reproduction.
The Station Point is the first comprehensive survey of Robert Bourdeau’s photographic career and a celebration of his body of work; truly a Canadian national treasure.
Robert Bourdeau has exhibited internationally since 1967. His work is in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; the Museum of Contemporary Art and The Renaissance Society, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the National Gallery of Canada, and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Ottawa.
Ann Thomas is curator of photographs at the National Gallery of Canada. She has organized numerous exhibitions and installations in this capacity and is the author of several catalogs and publications.
William Ewing, director of the Musée de l’Elysée, is a well-known curator and writer on photography. His exhibitions have been shown at many museums in America and Europe.
Sophie Hackett is the assistant curator of photography at the Art Gallery of Ontario and adjunct faculty in Ryerson University’s masters program in photographic preservation and collections management.
