Artistic production in L.A. has certainly been influenced by the international currents that shape other American art capitals like New York, but it has also bred and nourished indigenous styles that have emerged on the international stage as among the great art of our times. Sunshine &amp; Noir takes a look at the art and the artists that define art in L.A., featuring full-color examples from the work of over fifty Los Angeles artists, an in-depth chronology, interviews, biographies and essays by major critics such as Mike Davis. This modest catalogue provides an excellent introduction to and survey of the paintings of Sigmar Polke, one of the most significant artists of the last 50 years. Since the 1960s, Polke has been making paintings of a deeply ironic nature, works that make fun of the tropes that have dominated the world of modern art. As such, he has situated himself as something of a participant-critic in the dialogue concerning the relevance of painting in recent decades, and has made one of the strongest cases imaginable for its continuing relevance. With 50 color reproductions of important works from all periods of his career, as well as texts by the curators of both the Louisiana Museum in Denmark and the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo, Norway, Sigmar Polke: Alchemist is a welcome addition to the Polke literature.

Testimony to an artist both searching for a language adequate to his experiences and hunting for experiences that can fill out the available sets and scenery, Per Kirkeby's masonite paintings from the 1960s and early 1970s are rich and many, a strange, flat mix of the provincial and the cosmopolitan--from Brigitte Bardot to the Royal Deer Park in Copenhagen, from minimalistically expressionless stripes to expressive gestures, from grottos and caves full of longing to closed, inapproachable cabins from the western mythology of Hollywood. It is all there, in its own oddly subdued, spatially illusionistic way.

Arnold Newman is a master of the environmental portrait, the portrait that takes its subject's surroundings as a crucial, integral element to the portrayal of the person himself. (“Himself,” for there are only two portraits of women in this wonderful collection--Marilyn Monroe and Georgia O'Keeffe.) Newman's career began in 1941 but took off in 1946, when he moved to New York and received his first commission from Life magazine--a portrait of Eugene O'Neill in his library--and then from Harper's Bazaar--the portrait of Igor Stravinsky, all piano with the musician in the corner of the frame. Since then he has constructed an immaculate, cosmopolitan oeuvre that has captured the essential of its subject better than most others, from Piet Mondrian and his rigid easel to Max Ernst in a cloud of smoke and Surrealist objects, from Marcel Duchamp with a readymade to Leonard Bernstein in an empty concert hall, from Woody Allen scribbling notes to Joan Miró smiling like Puck. And here they all are, a wonderful cast of artist, poets, scientists and other characters, alongside an interview with the photographer and a thoughtful essay on his work.
