After thirty-three years, Paula Chamlee returned home to photograph and write about the farm where she grew up on the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, a farm where her parents, now in their late eighties, still farm their 1,100 acres all by themselves. This emotionally charged and aesthetically powerful document provides an intimate look at her home place and reveals a way of life and value system that are quickly vanishing. Paula explores her relationship to the farm where she was raised. Her writing in the Introduction sets the photographs in the context of Texas history "Notes on the Photographs" provides information and insights about the pictures and evokes the flavor of farm life in the twentieth century. In the Foreword, George F. Thompson meditates on the profound place that rural life, especially the family farm, still holds in the nation's collective imagination and memory.

Chamlee's warm-toned b&amp;w photos on heavy, creamy paper stock take on a pleasantly meditative sameness as the pages roll past to record the "little Madonna" shrines of Tuscany. The icons--made by both folk artists and trained sculptors--in fact vary considerably in their details and their settings, in the countryside and in towns and villages. Chamlee traveled through the region in 2000 and 2001 and was drawn by the icons' ubiquity and beauty as well as the spirit of devotion they express.
