Merrill Moore was a key member of the Fugitive group of poets, a group of then unknown poets who met to read and criticize each other’s work and that included John Crowe Ransom, Donald Davidson, Allen Tate and Robert Penn Warren. He was E. M Forster’s ‘favorite contemporary poet’. W. H Auden extolled his ‘first-class visual imagination’. Stephen Spender considered his output ‘among the best English poems written in the present century’. Yet for most readers, William Plomer (1903—1973) is now a faintly-remembered name. Born in Pietersburg, South Africa, Plomer settled in London in 1929, where he went on to occupy a central position in English letters. By the time of his death he had published ten books of poetry. In a voice impersonal and strange, Plomer’s best poems reveal a mind that delights in the ‘sensory, pictorial and plastic’ (though not, as he thought, at the expense of the metaphysical).

Transnational long before the term gained currency, Lola Ridge (1873-1941) was one of the most notable poets writing in America from the publication of her first book, The Ghetto, in 1918 until her death, inauspiciously, shortly before America’s entry into the Second World War. Included are the complete texts of her first three books of poems, The Ghetto, Sun-Up, and Red Flag, as well as the never before published manuscript Verses (1905), the book of early poems she sought to publish in Australia before departing for America in 1907. With its publication, Lola Ridge’s important place in the history of twentieth century poetry takes a significant step toward being recognized and restored.
