This book is about a charismatic young man with extraordinary powers of healing, compassion,forbearance, and clairvoyance - named Amon. Living in an abandoned tugboat on StatenIsland's Mariners Harbor waterfront, this modern day prophet performs everyday miracleswhile doing good work for the homeless and the downtrodden. Amon is befriended by a highschool science teacher, Tom Haley, whose rational perspective differs from Amon's spiritual reference frame. The story takes place during the turbulent 1970s when the country was torn apart by the Vietnam War, social change and unrest, and the sexual revolution. The contrasting lifestylesof the two friends are examined, along with the drinking culture of Staten Island's North Shore,in which the corner bar is the focus of the neighborhood's social life. The fast-paced story isinterspersed with thumb-nail sketches of 1970s celebrities and events: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Gloria Steinem, Ralph Nader, Albert Shanker, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, the Fair Housing and Roe v. Wade court decisions, and Alcoholics Anonymous. The concepts of economic disparity, ethnic conflict, spiritual-secular balance, and changing sexual mores in an evolving society, and idealism in the work-a-day world of 1970s America provide a backdrop to the unfolding plot. Notwithstanding their differences, the friendshipbetween the two protagonists, Tom and Amon, is an ongoing motif in the story.

The book is divided into three complimentary and enlightening parts: a short history, profiles, a quick-start guide, and an explanation of traumas that result from adoption.The author, who is a Korean adoptee, offers a unique and varied perspective on these issues. She makes a case for the Korean Adoptees acting as a crucial link in the Black Lives Matter movement. She advocates for the strength of the Black-Korean relations and also states the need for including adoption-based and race-based trauma in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The writing is engaging and clear- giving a background history and showing the intersection of different lives in a well-researched and factual manner. It is very interesting to see how she overlaps her personal experiences with the underlying narrative.Watching the Black Lives Matter movement unfold, while I felt moved and enraged, I was unable to comprehend the nature of the movement in its entirety. This book went a long way in helping me understand the way Asian communities perceive and interact with African American communities. While I am not a part of either community, it helped me to identify the key variables of these issues and I found myself pondering the ways in which my own community interacts with others. I was especially drawn to the profiles- the anecdotes and confessions of KADs growing up in an environment that is simultaneously their own and foreign. This book is a memoir written by an African American woman who grew up in the rural South during the late 1930s and1940s. Being poor and having to confront three types of prejudices-racial, color within the Negro race (some perpetrated by her own relatives), and poverty-affected her self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. She dreamed of being a different person, and in at least one instance while in grade school, she tried to change her personal appearance in a nonsensible manner that could have been dangerous.In her early twenties, just as her self-concept was improving, an uncontrollable illness made her feel that she was living between heaven and hell. She includes bits of history, sociology, and psychology in telling about her life. In the later part of the memoir, she describes the effect that being involved in a newly developing role in academia had upon her life and others.Through her writings, the reader becomes more knowledgeable about life as a black person and can learn some unknown facts about race relations, working in positions that are not well-known by the general public, experiences with sexism, and combating everyday human problems.

Ironically never saw the "light of day" hence the name of the book This book is more or less a first dive ticket to the ocean of my vision, granting new comers a brief understanding of what's going inside my head for a lack of a better term. I hope you'll enjoy it.
