Lilias Trotter's Parables of the Christ-life was first published by Marshall Brothers, London, and printed by E. Nister of Nuremberg (Bavaria). Though undated, her diaries reveal that it was conceived in 1897 while walking through the African hillsides then written at the Olivage Training Center outside Algiers during months of Saturdays in 1898. Her two parable books-Parables of the Cross and Parables of the Christ-life-written respectively in England and North Africa, compliment each other as Lilias explores faith-lessons derived from the plant life unique to each region. Though Parables of the Christ-life, like the first parable book, was popular upon publication with numerous reprintings, it had been out-of-print for decades. This singular facsimile edition is reproduced from the first edition and is faithful in both the presentation of text and colorplates.

In October 1876, twenty-three-year-old Lilias began, with her mother, a trip to Venice, Italy. While in Lucerne, Lilias purchased a sketchbook in which she recorded the journey along the carriage roads to Venice--where she met the famed John Ruskin, Victorian England's arbiter of artistic taste and the author, no less, of The Stones of Venice, the definitve artistic and architectural history of the city. Ruskin, impressed by young Lilias's talent, took it upon himself to educate her untrained eye, escorting her through the Grand Canal to view paintings and architecture, providing instruction in art which would continue in England. This facsimile edition of the sketchbook she carried to Venice and, no doubt, on sketching trips with John Ruskin, reveals first her untrained artistic talent--the discovery of which Ruskin declared in his 1884 "Art of England" lecture to be "about the only thing that makes me content in having gone there." And it contains views of Venice most likely instructed by the master himself.

Lilias Trotter's 1889 Pocket Sketchbook captured views from North Africa and Europe one year after she left London to live in Algiers and minister to the Arab people. Most of the views were sketched during the month of June while taking a break from the scorching heat of a North African summer.Her ability to quickly capture views with accuracy and beauty was a skill that John Ruskin, eminent Victorian art critic, extolled in his 1884 "Art of England" lecture and demonstrated with specimens removed from her Norwegian Sketchbook: "...they are patterns to you therefore only of pocket-book work; but what skill is more precious to a traveller than that of minute, instantaneous, and unerring record of the things that are precisely best?" Her range of subjects and scenes that were at once "lovely and honorable" met the high standard that Ruskin, mentor/friend, set and valued: mountains and clouds, ships and seascapes, figures in regional garb and headdress, flowers and architectural details.

Probably she was expecting no more than that, although there would have been the obvious excitement of personal contact with one of the most famous people in the English-speaking world.
