When the United States took on the building of the Panama Canal in 1904, workers were faced with extremely difficult living conditions. The tropical diseases such as malaria and yellow fever plagued them just as they had the earlier French effort. The housing stock left behind by the French was dilapidated and inadequate.About a hundred sets of beautifully drafted architectural plans left by the French came in handy for locating drains, etc., as the Americans made repairs to existing buildings. Some workers found insect ridden rooms in adjacent towns while others lived in tents or thatched huts near construction sites. Not wanting to endanger the lives of their families, most men left their wives and children behind.What started out as a cesspool of disease and loneliness eventually emerged as a little piece of paradise for its Canal Zone residents. This book tells some of the stories of the various townsites scattered along the fifty miles of the Panama Canal Zone between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. It also shares the fond memories of a few of its residents whose hometowns have changed since the Panama Canal was turned over to Panama on December 31, 1999, and the Canal Zone as they knew it was no more.

Frank Lloyd Wright at the University of Florida

Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the world's greatest contemporary architects. While Fallingwater is his best-known work, Wright designed over 1,000 buildings during his lifetime. Yet none of the three fraternity houses he planned during his career, in 1934, 1941, and 1952 were ever built. This book chronicles the genesis, development, and ultimate abandonment of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity house Wright created for students of the University of Florida, as told by a then-architecture student and member of the ZBT fraternity who assisted Wright. Containing detailed prints of Wright's drawings for all three planned fraternity houses in addition to his completed buildings at Florida Southern College, Frank Lloyd Wright at the University of Florida offers a fascinating view into Wright's frustrating struggles to complete these projects.

The book evolved from a project undertaken in an undergraduate honors course at the University of Florida to an international partnership over the two years it took to complete. Published by the Library Press at UF, the book exemplifies a deep collaboration among the library, undergraduates, library faculty, and Malagasy colleagues.

Polio, an infectious disease caused by a virus, became epidemic in the United States in the early to mid-20th century. Recounted in the form of a journal, this story about Edna Black Hindson does a wonderful job making the story of polio come alive. Edna caught polio in 1946, before the height of the epidemic, and the introduction of the vaccine ?and well after Franklin Delano Roosevelt turned Warm Springs into the only place focused only on treating poliomyelitis. Thus, her story shows how Americans in the 1940s understood and treated polio, how they were able to use the facilities at Warm Springs and the work it took to help children recover muscle control and the ability to move their limbs that had originally been paralyzed.
