In "Geography and Trade" Krugman provides synthesis of ideas and describes new models for implementing a study of economic geography that could change the nature of the field. Krugman loosely defines economic geography as the study of economic issues in which location matters. Economic theory usually assumes away distance. Krugman argues that it is time to put it back - that the location of production in space is a key issue both within and between nations.

This book investigates whether and to what extent foreign language textbooks can contribute to promoting adolescent pupils' acquisition of intercultural communicative competence. It gives a full scientific account of a research project carried out amongst Flemish learners of German. The focus of the research was on the relationships between the culture teaching approaches adopted in textbooks and the pupils' learning of culture. Although the sub-title refers to a particular group of pupils learning a particular language, the study has more general bearing and constitutes a substantial contribution to the literature, and in particular empirical research, on the development of intercultural competence in and through foreign language education.The composition of the volume reflects the affective, cognitive and contact dimensions of the culture learning process. It also gives space to the theoretical platform on which the research was built, and to the research methodology adopted. Chapter 1 sets out to contextualise and define the research topic. It clarifies the study's position within the field of culture-and-language learning-and-teaching theory, practice and research. It also situates the investigation into the specific context of teaching and learning foreign languages-and-cultures in Flanders. In chapter 2 the theoretical framework informing the study is developed. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the techniques of data collection and analysis employed, of the kinds of data collected, and of the chronology of data collection. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 provide an interpretative description and analysis of the investigation's key concepts. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the pupils' culture learning processes and analyse relationships between attitude, contact and perception data. In chapter 6 the culture teaching approaches adopted in the investigated textbook series are described and evaluated with regard to their potential for promoting the pupils' learning of culture. Chapter 7, finally, provides a summary overview of the study's main findings and presents the main conclusions that can be drawn from the evidence presented in earlier chapters. It estimates the value of the study's research methodology and theoretical framework. It also reflects on how the research findings can find application and implementation.

This publication is an initiative of the European Forum for Victim-Offender Mediation and Restorative Justice, and results from its first conference which was held in Leuven, Belgium, from 27-29 October 1999. The first six chapters consider victim-offender mediation and restorative justice from a more theoretical point of view. These analyses of theoretical, legal, policy, ethical and societal aspects of mediation and restorative justice have been written by well-known scholars in this field. The second part of the book consists of overviews of the situation with regard to victim-offender mediation in the eight European countries in which it is currently the most developed (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom). For these last chapters, a multitude of information was collected in each of these countries, and this is presented and analysed comparatively. The following topics are discussed for each of the countries: the history of victim-offender mediation in that particular country, the legal context, policy and implementation, the number of programmes and the way they function, the practice of mediation, the number and characteristics of cases, evaluation and research, and finally challenges, obstacles and expectations for the future. This is probably the first time that such extensive reports on the practice of victim-offender mediation in Europe have been brought together in this way.In publishing this book the European Forum is seeking to contribute to the realisation of one of its objectives, namely providing people all over Europe - and beyond - with information on victim-offender mediation and restorative justice in other countries. Restorative justice is a relatively new field and is still very much evolving. A full exchange of information and ideas will contribute to this process.

This book addresses themes in the newly emerging discipline of philosophy of chemistry, in particular issues in connection with discussions in general philosophy of science on natural kinds, reduction and ceteris paribus laws. The philosophical issue addressed in all chapters is the relation between, on the one hand, the manifest image (the daily practice or common-sense-life-form) and on the other the scientific image, both of which claim to be the final arbiter of "everything."With respect to chemistry, the question raised is this: Where does this branch of science fit in, with the manifest or scientific image? Most philosophers and chemists probably would reply unhesitatingly, the scientific image. The aim of this book is to raise doubts about that self-evidence. It is argued that chemistry is primarily the science of manifest substances, whereas "micro" or "submicro" scientific talk―though important, useful, and insightful―does not change what matters, namely the properties of manifest substances.These manifest substances, their properties and uses cannot be reduced to talk of molecules or solutions of the Schrödinger equation. If "submicroscopic" quantum mechanics were to be wrong, it would not affect all (or any) "microlevel" chemical knowledge of molecules. If molecular chemistry were to be wrong, it wouldn't disqualify knowledge of, say, water―not at the "macrolevel" (e.g. its viscosity at 50 C), nor at the pre- or protoscientific manifest level (e.g. ice is frozen water).

The field research and associated laboratory analyses reported in this volume represent more than 24 years of investigation in Upper and Middle Egypt by the Belgian Middle Egypt Prehistoric Project of Leuven University. During the course of these years, the project excavated 29 sites with clear evidence of living surfaces. "Palaeolithic living sites in Upper and Middle Egypt" serves to present the results of these investigations, which span in time from the oldest known human presence in the Egyptian Nile valley, estimated to be some 400,000 years ago, to the Epipalaeolithic era, approximately 6,000 years ago. The excavation data of the sites are illustrated by numerous plans, profiles and artefact drawings. Thus, work reported herein spans the known Palaeolithic era of the Egyptian Nile valley.
