'Page 1: Great Expectations' is an unusual typographic experiment designed to explore the relationship between graphic design, typography and the reading of a page. Crafted to engage the culturally curious, this publication collects the responses of 70 international graphic designers when posed with the same brief to design and lay out the first page of 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens, a text chosen in part because it directly references lettering as Pip searches for clues about his family from the letterforms inscribed on their tombstone. Each layout is accompanied by a short rationale explaining the designers decision-making process.

Ed van der Elsken dove into his extensive archive in the late seventies to compile a book of his black-and-white images of Amsterdam, the city in which he had always lived, with the exception of 1950-1954. He often worked in the neighbourhood of his house on Koningsstraat, taking photos on the Nieuwmarkt, Zeedijk and Waterlooplein. Atmospheric images of the fifties, the riots during the turbulent sixties, lots of people, young people, but also architecture and degradation in the old city centre. This unique document has now been reissued, including new scans from the original negatives.

Joost van Bleiswijks quest for the archetypal form may have launched his career, but his clear visual language is now the logical result of the construction process. Made of rectangular sheets, the forms of this product designers output tend to be almost abstract in their geometry, forcing him to select recognisable images. His studio and real-life partner, Kiki van Eijk, makes things that are simultaneously whimsical and surreal, emphasising the child-like wonder of objects, essentially toys for grown-ups. This compelling story of two designers  critical and supportive of each others work, immersed and inspired by their environment  can be read from either cover.

Irma Boom has become one of the most widely renowned and laureated book designers in the world today. Her often ingenious solutions to individual book productions have gained her international fame and her work is now collected by many leading museums such as the MoMa in New York. Besides book designs she also creates corporate identities, postage stamps and posters. The Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam Library honoured Irma Boom with a major retrospective exhibition of her work, now traveling to Paris. As a member of the artist group Les Nabis, the French-Swiss artist Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) was at the artistic forefront of Paris during the fin de siècle. During his career Francis Bacon (1909-1992) made 48 lithographs and etchings, which also reflect the themes of his paintings. His complete graphic works can be seen from April in the Noordbrabants Museum in s-Hertogenbosch and in their entirety in 'Francis Bacon, The complete graphic works'. His graphic images, just like his paintings, provide an impressive insight into the motives of one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
