The Hilton Brothers are the photographers Christopher Makos and Paul Solberg. Their moniker is derived from the Hilton Sisters, the 1930s Siamese-twin vaudeville stars--and of course from the hotel heiress Hilton sisters of today. Makos is already famed as a portraitist of many of the twentieth century's leading icons, particularly Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Taylor, John Lennon and Man Ray; Solberg is a rising talent who made his name with The Bloom Book, his 2005 collection of flower photographs. Makos and Solberg's first collaborative monograph as the Hilton Brothers takes the form of a travelogue compiling works made by the duo from 2004 to 2011. Tyrants and Lederhosen opens with separate sequences by each of the photographers, which preface their globe-trotting anthropological collaboration as they document and narrate their travels from America to Europe to the Middle East and Asia.

Graciela Iturbide (born 1942) is Latin America's most internationally admired photographer, as her receipt of the 2008 Hasselblad Foundation award confirmed. Although she is best known for her serial portrayals of her native Mexico, one of Iturbide's most popular individual photographs is "Perros Perdidos" (or "Lost Dogs" ), an image of several dogs in silhouette on a rocky outcrop taken in India in 1998. Graciela Iturbide: No Hay Nadie/There Is No-Onereveals the Mexican photographer's extended explorations in (mostly) cities in the north of India--Varanasi, Delhi and Calcutta, as well as Bombay--over the past 13 years. Iturbide's black-and-white images are strikingly at ease with their subject matter, able to locate arrangements of objects, architectural outline and urban signage without ever lapsing into visual tourism.

The American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith revolutionized the photo-essay form with the works he published in Life magazine between 1948 and 1956. This monograph reproduces images from six classic sequences of this era: Country Doctor (1948), which portrays the selfless and sometimes frustrating work of a doctor in rural America; Spanish Village (1950), perhaps the most powerful photographic study of 1950s Spain; Nurse Midwife (1951), which examines the life of a black woman in the American south; A Man of Mercy (1954), which documents Dr. Albert Schweitzer's humanitarian work in Africa; Pittsburgh (1955), Smith's first freelance assignment, previously unpublished; and Minamata 91971–1973), a photo-essay recording the effects caused by a mercury spill in a region inhabited by Japanese fishermen. Together, these six classic documents of twentieth-century photography affirm Smith as an impassioned conscience, with practical ends in mind for his work: “I put such passion and energy into my photographic work that, more than their being just for art’s sake, I prefer to think that my photographs push someone to action, to do something, to solve something,” he one wrote. This volume includes previously unpublished writings by Smith that elucidate his field techniques and guiding principles, as well as the memoir “A Walk to a Paradise Garden,” which tells the tale of his most acclaimed photograph. W. Eugene Smith (1918–1978) was born in Wichita, Kansas. After graduating from high school he moved to New York and found work with Newsweek, who famously fired him because he refused to use a medium-format camera. Smith joined Life magazine in 1939, and accompanied American battalions on the offensive against Japan. In 1955 he joined Magnum, and throughout the following two decades produced numerous key works of photojournalism. Smith died from a stroke in 1978.

Winner of the 2010 Spanish National Prize for Photography in 2010, José Manuel Ballester (born 1960) photographs large public buildings such as museums, railway stations and industrial structures whose purpose is often abstracted by Ballester’s emphasis on formal properties of a space. This volume presents 50 recent photographs, all previously unpublished.

In the 1920s, the Mexican government granted land in three different states to a handful of Mennonite groups fleeing religious persecution in Europe. These isolated agricultural communities still exist today, continuing their religious practice and ways of life. Mexican photographer Eunice Adorno was able to gain access to these isolated groups, living among them and documenting their customs. Intrigued particularly by the Mennonite women she met, Adorno made their inner world and lives the focus of her work, following them through their daily rituals as they would elaborately braid and coil their hair, play with their children, and work around the home. As Adorno describes them in her introduction, "Separated from work and from their husbands, the women forge their own universe, fashioned out of chats, memories, secrets, friendships, pleasures and diversions, and they hide this universe beneath their cumbersome and unrevealing clothes and a reserved gaze directed at the world."

The Kitchen: Homage to Saint Therese is a set of portrait photographs and videos of the “grandmother of performance art,” Marina Abramovic (born 1946). Shot in the abandoned space of a kitchen where Carthusian nuns had once fed more than 8,000 orphans, Abramovic is here seen cooking and meditating. Referencing Renaissance painting and the writings of Saint Therese of Ávila, in which the sixteenth-century nun describes her experiences of mystical levitation in church and kitchen, The Kitchen is equally an autobiographical work. “In my childhood,” Abramovic explains, “the kitchen of my grandmother was the center of my world [...] all my best memories come from there.” Accompanying this book’s images is a series of the artist’s own spiritual recipes: a series of haikus, prayers and mantras to liberate the mind from the confused flow of thinking.

Alberto García Alix (born 1956) is one of Spain’s best-known living photographers. Alongside his famed documentations of Spanish nightlife and various underworlds, García Alix has consistently produced self-portraits, which this volume compiles, from all periods of his career to date.

Trained as an agronomic engineer, Carsten Höller (born 1961) is known for his frequent use of mushrooms as a motif and theme in his installations and projects. His Artist’s Portfolio comprises a set of 19 photographs of sculptures of fungi. These works were produced in polyester, synthetic resin, wire, polyurethane, cardboard, stainless steel and wood, and then painted in acrylic.
