The San Rafael Swell is located in east central Utah, south of Price and west of the town of Green River.  This is an area of little water, lots of slickrock sandstone, soaring cliffs, upturned geologic formations and slot canyons.   This all-new 3rd Edition of the book that first came out in 1986, has been expanded from 160 to 224 pages, and there are about 90 more fotographs than in the 2nd Edition.  This edition still has all the hikes from previous printings, but each has been re-visited and updated.  The author re-walked most of the canyons.  The biggest changes for this 3rd Edition is the addition of 8 technical slot canyons where you'll need ropes and rappelling gear to get all the way through.  These canyons are either bolted, or have slings around chokestones for easy rappelling (usless the anchors have been washed away!).  This means a new level of challenge and excitment for the adventurous hiker.  Also included is an expansion to the colorful history of the San Rafael Swell (Old Spanish Trail, the Livestock Industry and Mining), plus expanded geology and information about the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry.

This is a canyon hiking guide to the Colorado Plateau, which covers the southeastern half of Utah, the northern half of Arizona, the western 1/5 of Colordo, and a small part of NW New Mexico. This new 4th Edition has been undated significantly beyond the 3rd. The author went back to almost all canyons, or at least to the trailheads, to check out the mile post markers, etc. Also, about half a dozen less-interesting canyons or hikes from the 3rd Edition were eliminated; while about a dozen new &amp; more challenging hikes have been added, plus another 32 pages. This 4th edition contains 320 pages and 191 fotographs, about 90 of which are new. 
 The new canyons are from scattered locations in southern Utah, primarily in Zion National Park, and the Escalante River, San Rafael Swell &amp; Robbers Roost country, along with major updates on slot canyons on the Navajo Nation. Other big changes to this edition are the addition of about a dozen new technical slot canyons; that is, canyons where you need ropes and rappelling gear to get through. This adds another dimension to excitement and challenge, and opens many new hiking areas previously closed to many of us. All these technical canyons are now either bolted-up, or have slings or webbing around boulders, making them ready for rappelling. 
 The general direction for this book, is toward slot canyons, which everybody likes; but it retains easy &amp; fun hikes to canyons with Anasazi ruins, another favorite. So if you're looking for petroglyphs or pictographs, and cliff dwellings or ruins, which some people try their best to hide, then this is your book. In the back of this book is a section listing the Best Hikes, including for the most part Slot Canyons, then best hikes to see Indian ruins, and Native American rock arts sites. This book tells the history of a small town in south central Utah located on the Union Pacific Railway line about halfway between Delta and Milford. Black Rock's story first began in about 1870 as a grazing area for milk cows brought out by ranchers and farmers from Fillmore and Kanosh, located to the east. Finally a store was set up in 1880 with the coming of the railroad. Slowly, one large ranch evolved about one kilometer east of tracks next to a large spring; as well as a small town located near the railroad depot. The little town of Black Rock developed around the railway depot, sheep shearing corrals, a mercantile store &amp; hotel for sheepmen and a one-room schoolhouse. 
 Much of the town died during the time of World War II, partly because of the loss of sheep herding &amp; sheep shearing in the area. In that time period, sheepmen started transporting sheep, and hauling supplies to their herders by truck, which ended the need for a store &amp; hotel. Sheep numbers also dropped, and after World War II, it became more difficult to find anyone who wanted to live and care for sheep in the desert. 
 Another reason for the death of the town was the change from steam to Diesel locomotives on the railway, which meant the railroad no longer depended on water from the Black Rock Springs to stay in business. All that's left today are the foundations of several buildings near the tracks, and the still-active &amp; running Black Rock Ranch. 
 This is also a guidebook of sorts to the area. It has 10 maps and/or floor plans of the hotel and station. Also discussed is the route of the Dominguez &amp; Escalante Party when they passed through the area and camped nearby in 1776.
