The somewhat pretentious title, “In the Shadow of Satan” might imply that this book is a philosophical dissertation on the subject of good and evil. It is not. It is a compilation of memories, first of a young boy, and then of a young adult, from the bloodiest period of 20th century Europe—during the days of the Second World War and Soviet occupation. These tragic events are described as seen through the young eyes of an eyewitness to history. This book does not pretend to furnish detailed information on the Jewish—as well as Christian—holocaust. Yet because the author lived daily in the shadow of those two satans—Nazism and communism—he startlingly reveals an even more true picture than contemporary writing could ever accomplish. Last year the author visited places that he described in this book—places of horror, of suffering, of inhumanity. In the August sunshine no trace of the awful past was visible. Those who lived through that satanic past can never escape its horror. The youth of today do not have a clue. This book must find its way to today’s young intellectuals so that the horrors of the past are not repeated. Political correctness today skews the reality of the past. In this book one can see that people of different walks of life, nationalities and ethnic backgrounds were both good and evil. In the gloom of despair—in some instances unprecedented—human nobility flowered like beautiful white lilies on stagnant black water. The American people—even professional historians—have quite limited information on the events which took place in Poland in the years 1939–1989. This simple tale provides a realistic picture of those days, and also shows that the human spirit is invincible and is able to survive and grow even in very difficult environments.

Charles Strasser fled from his native Czechoslovakia when he was 11 in 1938 just barely in advance of the Nazi war machine. Six years later he joined the allied armies and participated in the final victory. Before his twenty-first birthday he founded a company that would employ hundreds and have an international scope, with ties to Germany, Japan and many developing countries. While he excelled in business, it was for his many humanitarian services that he was awarded the distinction, Officer of the Order of the British Empire. As the bumper sticker says, If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you read it in English, thank a Marine. I ve been privileged to be both.  This book details my life in the Marine Corps and in the teaching profession. I concluded my story with a call for a REVOLUTION in America. A revolution against the tyranny of government in which politicians are unresponsive to anything but getting re-elected. I contend we must WAKE UP AMERICA before it is too late. However, before we can get to the WAKE UP part I need to establish who I am, and that begins with heading out into a new world and commitment to a country that I love.  After graduating on June 7th 1955, I boarded a train in Philadelphia on June 8th and headed for Parris Island and a 31-year career in the regular Marine Corps. Beginning as a Private, I was advanced to Staff Sergeant, then, in Vietnam, to 2nd Lieutenant and finally completed my career as a Lieutenant Colonel, the highest rank an ex-enlisted man was allowed to go.  My career was anything but normal. My specialty included the counterintelligence and intelligence world. I served with the U.S. State Department on embassy duty, the Secret Service on protection details for Presidents Johnson and Nixon, the Central Intelligence Agency in Vietnam, and finally back with the State Department as the Defense and Naval Attache'© to Jamaica. My adventures are detailed in, I hope, a frank and honest manner. Some will be shocked. But all will be wiser. I consider myself extremely lucky to have traveled the world, survived nearly three years in Vietnam, reached new professional highs as the G-2 Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade and the G-2 1st Marine Division. Upon retirement, I was offered high paying jobs in the Washington, D.C. area, but opted to return to Pennsylvania and enter the teaching profession, feeling that it was a way of giving something back. I believe I was a successful teacher because of my Marine Corps training. Marines train until they get it right. And they do NOT fail. That is the attitude I took to the classroom. Whatever extra time was needed after class or before class, I made sure my students succeeded. Parents, administrators and other teachers often sat in on my presentations. In my final year of teaching, 2004, my classes were moved to the auditorium to accommodate larger classes, which included parents as well as students. I was known best as the teacher that told the truth on what I referred to as the warts on the nose of America. The kids and I fortunately loved each other. By their nomination, as well as from the parents, I received Educator of the Year for Berks and Montgomery Counties in 1999 and Who's Who Among America's Teachers for twelve straight years. As indicated in the title there are two main thrusts to this book. My military career was a life style of hard-charging, results-oriented hard knocks which paved the way for a successful career in the classroom. In retirement I have reflected on all the battles past and lessons learned. This is the drop-dead serious straight talk that I want you to read. It is my contention we have LOST Democracy in America. If we don't WAKE UP AMERICA, this country is going to hell in the proverbial hand basket. We have an unresponsive, corrupt government. We elect people on looks and sex and we let others think for us. We are in deep trouble!! It is my hope that this book will give you the knowledge and motivation to make a difference before it is truly too late.

Hard Knocks and Straight Talk: From the Jungles of Vietnam to the American Classroom

Market forces and corporate actions beyond your control will cause fluctuations in the value of your holdings.

 There is one important action you can take that will put cash in your brokerage account, today and month after month as time rolls by.
 Selling Covered Calls and Naked Puts is a stock market strategy favored by many savvy investors. Here s how it works. Take one of your stocks, Stock ABC, which has a market price of $29. If you will agree to sell that stock (a Call option) for $30 on the third Friday of next month the market will pay you X amount of dollars today (the option premium). That s the money that you are currently leaving on the table. The premium X varies by stock and typically is two to three percent of the stock price.
 Think about what can happen when you sell the option. Only one of two things will happen. If the stock price of ABC is above $30 on the third Friday you sell it for $30. That will happen about 30% of the time. The other possibility is that ABC is selling for $30 or less on the third Friday. In that case the option expires and you can sell another Call. 
 Either way the option premium Real Cash Money is in your brokerage account ready to be spent or reinvested.
 Continue the process month after month for a constant cash income from your portfolio.
 The Naked Put strategy also gives you immediate cash. Using the same example with Stock ABC, which is in your portfolio and has a market price of $29, if you agree to buy additional shares at a discounted price of $27.50 on the third Friday of next month (a Put option) the market will pay you Y amount of dollars today (the option premium). If the stock price is above $27.50 on the third Friday the option expires and you can sell another Put, generating more cash income. If the price does dip below $27.50 then you buy the additional shares and can now sell more Covered Calls. The put premium Y varies by stock and typically is one to three percent of the stock price.
