Fifty years after Robert Frank’s The Americans, the German photographer André Lützen sets off on his own odyssey through everyday life in America. His road trip takes us from Colorado to Mississippi. The series radiates Lützen’s own singular style: documentary photography that derives its vitality from atmosphere and movement while also evoking aspects of self-imposed solitude. Following the success of Jessica Backhaus’ first book, Jesus and the Cherries, about life in rural Poland, What Still Remains is a photo series made up of fifty works created since 2006 in various locations. Backhaus, a German American photographer, now pursues in this new cycle of photographs the question of why things that have been forgotten or left behind pop up in specific places and then seem to take on a life of their own.
Jessica Backhaus, born in Germany in 1970, studied photography and visual communications in Paris. Here she met Gisèle Freund, who became her mentor. In 1995 her passion for photography drew her to New York. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Martin- Gropius-Bau, Berlin. Backhaus is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York and The Photographers’ Gallery in London.
Jean Dykstra, editor-at-large of Photograph magazine, is a Brooklyn-based photography critic and editor who contributes to a number of publications, including Art on Paper and Art in America.

What Still Remains

It was Thursday, the 5th November 1992. I had no idea that on this particular day I would meet the legendary photographer Gisèle Freund and that it would have such an impact on my life.
Jessica Backhaus’ book is a tribute to Gisèle Freund on what would have been her one hundredth birthday in December 2008, a testament to the friendship between the great photographer and the photography student in Paris during the 1990s. Intended as a posthumous birthday present, Backhaus compiled a collection of images that visually convey what the great artistic and intellectual figures of the twentieth century taught her.

Leigh Bowery

With Australian artist Leigh Bowery (1961–1994), this richly illustrated catalog devotes itself to one of the most colorful border-crossers of the London and New York club, fashion, and art scenes of the 1980s and 1990s. Bowery made his sexuality a means of aesthetic expression, and he consciously used his own body in excessive abundance as an artistic media. Leigh Bowery’s influence reached through the fashion, club, and art worlds to impact, amongst others, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Boy George, John Galliano, the Scissor Sisters, and David LaChapelle. He also inspired some of Lucian Freud’s most fascinating nude paintings.

With Summer Heart, German photographer Thekla Ehling (born in 1968) keeps pace with the growing up of her children and friends. She documents situations and moods so that the viewers find themselves entangled in connotations and memories of their own childhoods. Ehling’s pictures often show moments of isolation, in which a young spirit seems to regard itself as if in a trance. There are preoccupied looks, evidently comparing a current event with one already experienced.In 2008, the book was presented successfully at the first New York Photo Festival and Photo Miami, and the series will be shown at the 2009 PULSE Contemporary Art Fair in New York.

This period is followed by the symbolist art of the fin de siècle, in which the nude becomes a mirror of psychic moods.
