People get it wrong. The saints are more human than the rest of us, not less. And this is so not only in the great saints like Padre Pio, who once punched a man who denied his stigmata, but in lesser known holy ones as well. Peter Maurin, for example, the co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, knew the pull of pride. That's why he said, Don't try and be a big shot. Be a little shot. And Blessed Anna-Maria Taigi? She once threatened her ambitious daughter with a hot poker. There would be no social climbing in her family. They are more alive than the rest of us, and that is because they understand humility. It is sanity, joy, the only way to heaven. Through their intercession, may we grow in it daily.

Sonnets and Lyrics. The Sonoran Desert of south-central Arizona teems with marvelous plant life: the green-skinned tree called Palo Verde; dagger-leaved agaves with their towering flower spikes; the spiny spears of the Ocotillo; and countless cacti chollas, prickly pears, barrel cacti, hedgehogs, pincushions, and on and on. Amid these lesser wonders stands the Saguaro, king of cacti, spreading its almost-human arms above its subjects. From this monarch the Saguaro Forest takes its name. And from the paradox of the green desert the arid forest the poems of the present collection were born.   A Saguaro Forest surrounds us all. The world is the Saguaro Forest a place of beauty and wonder, ever pointing beyond itself to the greater beauty and wonder of its First Cause and Final End, while at the same time confronting us with the discomfort and danger of its thorns, reminding us that this is no Eden, that for the present we partake of paradise only by Hope.

This Ballad of Sixty-six Days was written as a tribute to the man who reportedly wrote 9000 poems and is considered the greatest hymnologist in the English language. Charles Wesley had no easy time on St. Simons, but it is hoped the Ballad will show him as a young man of conviction and honesty, also as one with whom to share a meal would have been a pleasure. Part I of the Ballad is informed by John Wesleys diaries and by the author s own experiences of life on St. Simons Island, such as being bitten by no-see-ums and watching herons and egrets fish for lunch. Part II derives from Charles Wesley s Journal covering the period of March 9, 1736 to May 12, 1736. Illustrations by Ed Cheshire.
