For perhaps the first time, the author has attempted a holistic account of the monarchy in modern Greece. The reader, on the basis of information about the political behaviour of the Greek and his relationship with authority in every form, is able to understand why this specific type of constitution was chosen. The progress of the monarchy is explored in parallel with the quest for popular legitimization and the constitutional dimension of the question, including the contradictions in the constitutional legislation and the fragility of a democratic constitutional monarchy. Three figures of the Dynasty are discussed and, in the cases of Constantine the First and Frederika, an attempt is made to separate myth from reality. The philanthropic attitude of members of the two dynasties is discussed together with the deep-rooted socio-political dimension of the monarchy. Finally, the author examines the causes of the unravelling of the strong, but uneasy bond between people and monarchy.

The mosaics in the Rotunda in Thessaloniki are the most significant decorations that remain from the early Byzantine period. This richly illustrated book invites the reader to enter the building and experience the splendid golden and silver mosaics that cover cupola and vaults. Every picture tells a story. A touching photographic journey, captured in over 500 stereoscopic glass plates by the doctor and photographer Nissim Levis, a member of a prominent family in the Romaniote Jewish community of Ioannina. They were found by chance, in a corner of history and the city, in the possession of a street vendor who invited passersby to examine them by looking into a wooden box, for a fee - "one frank for the panorama, ladies and gentlemen!" A charming voyage in time that starts during the last fifteen years of Ottoman rule in Ioannina, with stops along the way for the city's major historical events and for visits to some of the world's most cosmopolitan locales of that period. Most of all, however, it is a small tribute to the memory of a group of individuals who would otherwise have been remembered only as simple rows on the Holocaust Museum's list of victims.

Twelve years after the first edition of this book the time has come for an enlarged and improved second edition. This was prompted by the need to update it with the new results of historical and archaeological research on the panhellenic sanctuaries and their games, as well as from the need to replace and supplement the photographic material of the many sites and monuments where excavation and restoration works have provided new insights. In this way readers have in their hands a book that is fully up to date about the Pan-Hellenic games and ancient Greek athletic. Modeled after physical exercises and competitions that existed in earlier Near Eastern cultures, hundreds of athletic games took place in Greek antiquity, extending across every area of the Mediterranean in which Greek culture flourished. Of the vast number of games, four attained the status of panhellenic games: the Olympic games, held at Olympia in honor of Zeus; the Pythian games at Delphi, at the festival of Apollo; the Isthmian games, at the sanctuary of Poseidon at Isthmia; and the Nemean games, celebrated in the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea. The Panathenaic games, which took place at the festival of the Panathenaia in Athens in honor of Athena, were, at their peak, equal in brilliance to those held at the panhellenic festivals. In these five games, more than anywhere else, the magnificent culture and ideology of Greek antiquity flourished. The spectacle of the games gave rise to a sporting tradition that engages the world to this day. Founded as early as the 8th century BC, the games held at Olympia, however, were the oldest and most important and surpassed all the others in their fame and glory. Games and Sanctuaries in Ancient Greece celebrates the athletes, the games, the sanctuaries, the cities and, above all, the inspiring spirit of the ancient Greeks over a span of a millennium and a half, from the earliest mentions of athletics in Homer's Iliad and other literary sources, through the Classical age, and into the Hellenistic, Roman and late antique periods. That our modern athletes still compete every four years in such contests as the pentathlon, discus, javelin, boxing, jumping, wrestling and running events, much as their ancient antecedents did centuries before them, is a testament to the longevity of competition, triumph and defeat.

This monograph on the castle of Modon leads us on a journey from Homer to the 20th century, and concentrates particularly on the Venetian presence. It aims to remain accessible to the general reader, and explores certain themes that until now have been shrouded in darkness: the correct name of Modon, its ancient walls and coins, the written and pictorial evidence for the castle, the structure of its Venetian administration, the deciphering and identification of the 27 coats of arms of Modon, the history of the lion of Venice, the study of the 18 lions, embedded in the walls, the discovery of the real attribution of the wrongly named Morosini, column, the restoration of the name of the so-called Villehardouin tower, the examination and reading of the mason's mark of the central gate, the finding of the correct original name of the eight-sided tower of the mole, which is still called by its Turkish name Bourtzi, and the identification of the Mediaeval form of the old harbour. When the restoration of the castle is secured, excavations will be able to bring to light those treasures still hidden in once-rich. Modon. Some of these treasures will demonstrate a privileged development, others will bring out a particular sensitivity. Some are buried, under the ground, some others have fallen into the sea, but all of them are locked up in a talkative silence. Time and Man have shifted and accumulated the soil, burying valuable evidence of the past. Nature's fury threw down buildings and sent to the depths the ships that ignored her caprices. Everything that escaped the earthquakes, conquerors, and the antiquities looters remains under earth and stones. The most valuable treasures are those that do not, gleam, as long as there are those that value the knowledge they reveal. The debt to cultural heritage is incalculable; the damage it has suffered, great; concern for its preservation, however, is small, for the time being. It is good for people to dream; but it is safer to know what they must do when they wake up.

The album of the interior designer George Petrides with the title George Petrides Interiors Essence Mediterraneenne is just out by Kapon Editions (edited by Art Counselor Lia Ellina Tornaritis). "I wanted so much to meet George when I happened to see some of his work in friends' homes, different styles yet with a positive aura and with such elegant taste! I appreciated the respect he showed to the owners, the creativity of the space intervening only in making their dreams come true, advising not imposing. Whoever I asked about him they would tell me incredible stories of inexhaustible humor, of how easily he became loved because of it and that if he singled you out he could be your friend forever. We met at a friend's party in Athens and I asked him if he would decorate my apartment in Cyprus, and thus was the beginning of a friendship that lasts for many yearsperhaps because our relationship is based initially on the admiration that I have for his restless, creative and youthful spirit but mainly for his irreproachable character. I am delighted that this book is to be published because it not only makes me proud that he is a Cypriot but also that he comes from my home town Famagusta. George Perides--Curriculum Vitae George Petrides was born in Famagusta, to a Cypriot father and a Greek mother. He studied Interior Design in London, and immediately after his graduation he continued living there where he was employed for two years by Heals. At this time he gave his first interview to "TIME AND TIDE" magazine on the house of the mayor of Westminster. He remained for seven years in multicultural London and then returned to Cyprus for his military service. His original plans were to return to London after the end of his service but serious professional offers, such as decorating hotels, stores and private homes were offered to him, so he decided to stay in Famagusta. As time went by, the offers multiplied and his return to London was postponed. The Turkish invasion and the occupation of Famagusta forced him to leave for London where he remained for two years. He started again from scratch with great success. Although his fervent wish was to remain in London, a very important professional proposition brought him to Athens, where for the third time he made a new start. After decorating the Pierides gallery his career took off. He decorated with particular style and taste professional spaces, and private residences in Europe, America and the Middle East. He is based in Athens and continues to proffer new ideas and propositions on decoration.
