Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain

Over forty years and across a variety of media, artist Rick Bartow has created a powerful body of work. His representations of humans, animals, hybrid creatures, and shadowy figures display such exquisite beauty or grotesque absurdity—sometimes both at once—that a viewer cannot help being pulled into the artist's world. The experience can be whimsical and troubling by turns, but is always undeniably transformative. Born in Oregon, Bartow is a member of the Wiyot tribe of the Humboldt Bay region, and his art carries influences of his heritage as well as his fine-art training, travels, and life events.
This exhibition catalog accompanies the show Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain, which originated at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (University of Oregon, Eugene) and will be on view through 2018 at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (Santa Fe, NM); the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ); Washington State University Museum of Art (Pullman); and the Autry National Center (Los Angeles). Full-color images display key works from the show, supplemented by a comprehensive visual checklist of pieces. Essays by the show’s co-curators and by Lawrence Fong, former curator of American and regional art at the JSMA, explore key themes in the artist’s oeuvre.

History & Criticism

Brian Lanker saw more than most of us do. He saw opportunities in the moment, and he grabbed a camera, “the tool that was as quick and reflective as his brain,” writes sports columnist and editor Blaine Newnham. Newnham recommended Lanker’s hire as picture director at the Eugene Register-Guard in 1974, just one year after Lanker had won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography at age 24, for his photographs in the Topeka Capital-Journal of a couple bringing forth their second baby during natural childbirth. “I want to show people things they can’t see, normally,” Lanker said. That quote from Brian Lanker, along with many others, can be found among the captions in these pages, all of which were researched and written by Mike Tharp, a war correspondent and award-winning journalist, with whom Lanker teamed up at the Topeka Capital-Journal and became lifelong friends. From the Heart combines Tharp’s captions with a striking selection of Lanker’s photographs and a collection of essays written by Lanker’s colleagues and friends, who for the most part were one and the same. These essays—thoughtful, poignant, funny, and respectful—tell the story of Lanker’s bolting career start at the Topeka Capital-Journal, his ceaseless creativity, his driving work ethic, and his giving heart. In her prologue, writer and poet Maya Angelou writes, “There was a generosity about Lanker, which allowed him to give himself to everyone as he was needed.” Brian Lanker was a photojournalist with the eye of an artist. Some of his photographs are timeless, and others are wholly of their time. From the Heart is a tribute to his singular vision, and a moving portrait of both man and artist.

This catalogue details an exhibit in 2015-16 of the Jack and Susy Wadsworth Collection at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon. The collection includes 157 modern and contemporary Japanese prints. This remarkable collection, featuring woodblocks, intaglios, lithographs, screenprints, and mixed-media works by seventy-seven Japanese and Western artists, significantly augments the museum's capacity to teach about Japanese graphic art from the late twentieth- and early twenty-first-centuries.

The catalog to accompany the exhibition of the same title. This extensive body of work in painting, drawing, and collage by Eugene, Oregon-based artist Keith Achepohl was inspired by three weeks spent at the Morris Graves Foundation Artist Residency in 2011. In the years since, including a second stay at the residency in 2016, Achepohl produced nine distinct yet interrelated explorations of the plants and trees that he observed at Morris Graves's final home, ¿The Lake¿ in Loleta, California. Achepohl began this work with close studies of his subject matter (including skunk cabbage, water lilies, and pond irises). The finished works are, as he describes, ¿more fantasy than reality," ultimately presenting an intensely personal language of nature that developed from "from careful observation to mnemonic response."
