Charles Simeon, the doyen of the evangelical movement in the Hanoverian Church of England, was a passionate advocate of Anglicanism’s liturgical heritage. His sermons on The Excellency of the Liturgy, delivered at Cambridge University in 1811, were amongst the most popular he ever preached. This Joint Liturgical Study offers an extended abridgement of The xcellency of the Liturgy, with a historical commentary to set the sermons in their context. It demonstrates both their devotional motivation and their polemical edge, and shows why Simeon rushed the sermons into print in the midst of widespread controversy over evangelical attitudes to the Book of Common Prayer.

Ordo Romanus Primus (ORP) is a descriptive account in Latin of the papal mass at Easter in Santa Maria Maggiore, probably at some time in the seventh or eighth century. It is the first such account, and differs from earlier evidence of the Roman rite by its relative disregard for the spoken text, which is usually only cited in ORP as providing cues for the ceremonial action. The 'action', however, is detailed, is often surprising, and gives a three-dimensional approach to a rite which, in its textual form, only tells the half of what was happening. The whole action is set on a large canvas, so that the account starts with the procession of the papal household from the Lateran. As Alan Griffiths put it 'the nature of ORP is to be a key to ritual business, not to text', and he adds 'one might describe it as an "events management" document.' There has been no full edition of the text in English since that of Atchley in 1905, and his translation has today a highly dated look to it. Alan Griffiths has drawn upon the Latin text collated by Michel Andrieu in his French edition of the ordines Romani in 1948, and has provided his own fresh and contemporary translation of it into English, running in parallel columns with the Latin. It makes a valuable addition to the series of Joint Liturgical Studies which have made such a large range of patristic liturgical materials available to students who work largely in English.

When Vatican II provided (to universal astonishment) that worship might be conducted in the vernacular, there immediately arose the question for English-speakers: What will our vernacular language of liturgy be like? In the event the Church devised a process by which an 'International Commission on English in the Liturgy' (ICEL) drafted translations, and they were then approved by the appropriate authorities in Rome. Thus the first official texts in English came into force in 1973 and became the accustomed texts of two generations of worshippers. Then in 2001 the Vatican 'Instruction', Liturgiam Authenticam, set out a new set of principles for translation, not least that the language should be more 'Latinate' and should not steer too near to texts used by other denominations. A new ICEL was appointed, next texts were drafted and sent to Rome for vetting and approval, and finally new authorized English-language texts came into force in September 2011. Much of the reaction to the new texts, whether from ordinary worshippers, journalists, theologians or English scholars, has been adverse. So at an early stage Thomas O'Loughlin, convened a study day with invited speakers, including both Roman Catholics and Anglicans, in Spring 2012. Now, at the request of the Alcuin/GROW Joint Editorial Board, Thomas O'Loughlin has edited the papers to give them more permanent form. The result is a valuable critical resource enunciating principles of translation and bringing the new liturgical texts under careful professional scrutiny.

The two authors who come together to present this Study are well-known experts in their field of patristic liturgy, and not least for their work on early Eastern initiation rites. Paul Bradshaw is known for his researches and scholarly writing across the whole range of patristic liturgy, including not only baptismal, eucharistic and ordination rites, but also the origins of daily offices and the roots of the liturgical year. Within this series of Joint Liturgical Studies he provided no 2 in 1987, The Canons of Hippolytus, and no 8 in 1988, Essays in Early Eastern Initiation, a symposium the title of which gave rise to the present volume's title. Juliette Day provided no 43 in this series in 1999, Baptism in Early Byzantine Palestine 325-451 and also no 59 in 2005, Proclus on Baptism in Constantinople; while her major work in this sphere has been The Baptismal Liturgy of Jerusalem: 4th and 5th Century Evidence in Jerusalem, Egypt and Syria (Ashgate, Aldershot, 2007). Paul Bradshaw here investigates the relationship of anointing candidates for baptism to the actual immersion of them in water, running his enquiry across three centuries from the second to the fourth, and across the whole of Syria. He gently queries conclusions of previous authors, particularly those which have been propounded with a confidence that has outrun what the evidence (under careful inspection from Paul Bradshaw, the advocate of 'splitting') has warranted. Juliette Day on the other hand has gone to a particular set of lectures of a single author in a single city at a single time - namely the Catechetical Lectures of Cyril of Jerusalem, delivered by him in 351. She combs the lectures in order to put together a reasonable construction of the baptismal rite for which Cyril was preparing his catechumens.
