In the twelfth century, Korea was divided into two camps of Buddhist tradition: the Hwaom scholars of textual study tended to discuss extremely abstruse theories about the dharmadhatu without having any practical course of direct, personal authentication, while the Son practitioners were involved in mere sitting-meditation, resolutely avoiding all analysis of the philosophical foundations for such practice. Chinul's recognition of the limitations of the both viewpoints led to his attempt at a philosophical synthesis of "theory (Kyo)" and "practice (Son)". Chinul's interpretation of the relationship between Kyo and Son is not only relevant to the historical development of Korean Buddhism, but also important in the way it sheds light on Mahayana philosophy in general, especially in regards to the question of how Buddhist theory relates to Buddhist practice.

Film critics, film historians, and film students around the world, whom I have met or haven't yet, not only told me that they desire to know more about Korean film history but asked me to tell them about Korean films. Of course, this international interest in Korean films is derived from the fact that Korean films in the 1980s began to be attracted to many international film festivals around the world. They were also introduced to foreign countries through TV and Korean film weeks. The 1980s brought about a great crop of Korean films, and I, the author of this book, am very much pleased with the fruits of this effort. For Korea, its film history began with the advent of foreign film in 1903 and the first film production began in 1919. Therefore, Korean film history will reach its 70th birthday at the time of publication of this book.

In view of the present state, this book attempts to deal with historical matters and other aspects of Korean music and Korean musicology. In fact, this volume is an essay collection of my studies written in English during the last 25 years as a musicologist, which range from as early as an article appearing in the academic journal, Ethnomusicology, in 1973 by the Society for Ethnomusicology in USA, to as late as my keynote address at the 2nd International Symposium for Korean Musicology in 1998. </p>
